Hey guys,

New to the board. Looking through posts, I'm hoping there's enough knowledge and expertise on here to help me out! :)

Has anyone ever heard this?

Apparently...Nintendo released a proto-version of Tetris for the Game Boy in the US and Japan. Tetris version 1.0 has "23" stamped on the cartridge and was produced in extremely limited quantities offering several differences to the standard print. Known differences include the A-TYPE song, a different level-up system and apparently the scoring is slightly changed in this version as well. According to a couple of sites I've found online, only a handful are known to exist.

Differences against v1.1 also include:

-Version 1.0 requires you to score 20 lines on Level 9 to proceed to Level 10. This was changed for Version 1.1 to 100 lines.
-Version 1.0 has a much shorter copyright screen, lasting only three seconds. The copyright screen in Version 1.1 lasts for ten seconds, though pressing Start after six seconds will go to the title screen.
-Different Level-up sound also used for entering the next screen. A different version of the 1.1 level-up jingle exist, and was intended to be used, but was likely changed at the last minute.
-Accessing unused level-up jingle found in Version 1.0, can be granted by using the Game Genie code 084-F5D-E62 which will replace the current level-up sound.

Something tells me this is known by so few people, that it's yet to even be considered "rare".

I'm just wondering if any of you have ever come across such a thing and if so, what you think it might be worth?

Cheers,
RNB

Actually, the only copies that have been found were Japanese.

Some say it was only sold in a game+Game Link bundle that was only sold in Japan (since, well, every Game Boy sold in North America, and maybe other regions, for the first four years it was on the market included both the game and Game Link).

Cheers SparTonberry. I never knew it was solely a Japanese version. Learn somethin' new everyday.

Do you have any idea of how many were made?

That youtube clip is full of BS.

I've had two copies, one that came with a link cable box that has 20 stamped on it. AFIK, if is has no letter after the number, then it is v. 1.0
Not extremely rare but quite rare relatively to the normal version that was sold in the millions.
You probably find v 1.0 in every one of those Japanese link cable boxes, so it's not a prototype (who releases a prototype?)
You also notice the diffierence immediately when you start it because the title screen says "Bullet Proof" and not "Bullet-Proof".

It can also be found on multi game pirate carts along with Tengen Tetris.

Are you talking about Nintendo NES Tetris, or Famicom Tetris? They're entirely unrelated games. Not even the same publisher, developer, engine... It matters which one the pirate carts include.

Nintendo never released their US/EU Tetris in Japan.
BPS never released their Japan Tetris in US/EU.
Tengen Tetris wasn't sold in Japan either.

Yes, there are many 8-bit Nintendo console versions of Tetris.

Famicom Tetris by BPS (not the same as the Nintendo versions, only released in Japan. Similar mechanics to Microsoft's Windows Entertainment Pack version, you can't make the block fall faster, only can make it immediately drop to the bottom. Also, it only contains the mode known as Mode B in the Nintendo version.)
NES Tetris by BPS/Nintendo (not released in Japan. MAYBE the SNES version was released on Nintendo Power flash carts. Or maybe only Dr. Mario was released standalone. But the combo cart version definitely wasn't released in Japan.)
Game Boy Tetris (released internationally)
Tengen Tetris (released only in US. And maybe on the VS. arcade system.)
Tetris 2+BomBliss (released only in Japan. Contains a Tetris mode very much like the Nintendo version, except it allows 2 players. Not the same as Tetris Flash.)
Tetris Flash (known as Tetris 2 outside Japan)
Tetris Blast (Game Boy, Bombliss only. Known as Super Bombliss in Japan.)
Never played the other versions:
Tetris DX (Game Boy Color)
Magical Tetris Challenge (Game Boy Color)
Tetris Plus (Game Boy)
