View Full Version : Gunlord, Fast Striker, and Last Hope don't work on my Dreamcast?

So, Gunlord was just released on the Dreamcast recently, and I was happy to purchase a "Newcomer Bundle" from NG DEV which came with Gunlord, Fast Striker 1.5 and Last Hope Pink Bullets, seeing as how I missed them when they first came around.

Happy me receives my package in the mail, but none of them are being read by my Dreamcast :( I know they're supposed to be region free, so my North American model can't be the problem. Also, it reads North American games no problem still, so I don't think its a dirty disc reader or something.

Is there something I don't understand going on here? Does my Dreamcast being a model 2 have something to do with this?? Please help! Thank you!

You probably have a newer Dreamcast model that has the security feature in place. Basically Sega did a revision on some of the newer Dreamcasts so that pirated games direct boot or bootloaders (first way to play pirated games) don't work. You can pick up a Dreamcast for cheap these days and the chances are they will work on that.

What is the serial number and manufacture date for your Dreamcast? Just curious. (It's on the bottom of the system.)

It reads "DUO87877977". . . I hope that's what you were looking for. It appears to be produced in December 2000 and there's also a "2" in a circle next to the "NTSC-U." That does seem to be very late in the Dreamcast's lifespan.

... I thought this was proven to be false?

if true, wouldn't a modchip fix that?

Modchip has nothing to do with it.

Those newer released titles are simply on CDr are they not? Most Dreamcasts read them just fine, some will only do so after a laser/pot adjustment. For example I have 3 Dreamcasts, after some time they read retail but not CDr the other way around, slight adjustments then they read one but not the other until adjusted just right to read everything.

It might be false though this was from my memory years ago when the bootloader was released and some people say that they bought Dreamcasts and couldn't boot up the boot loader. I hope I am wrong and it is just the GD Rom laser.

Update:
Check this link out...again I don't know if it is true though you need the Mil-CD to boot games from CDR:

Interesting. I have heard conflicting reports about mil-CD compatibility in late model Dreamcasts. Some say after a certain date they're not compatible, some say it's only the last batch of Japanese units, and some say it never happened. The owner of the GOAT Store was pretty adamant that nobody ever came forward and said that his games didn't work on their system. Then again, their games stated up-front that they may not work on late-model systems, which probably scared away potential test subjects.

Many, if not most are actually pressed CD-ROMs. I have no idea if that makes a difference to the Dreamcast.

The number 2 on there indicates that it's the third revision (all launches are 0, not sure what the DoMs are for 1s and 2s). The real question is whether CD-ROMs work on all versions with the number 1. 0 should be just fine.

I have about 10-15 US consoles spanning from a launch system to almost certainly an end-of-life model including numerous variations in production date and country. If it would be of interest, I can test the game in each one this weekend and see what happens.

I would be very interested to see if any system you have around the same release date as mine would play these games.
