Original Xbox disc read error

I found a really cheap Xbox at the local thrift. It turns on, but takes quite a long time to load discs and can't even get past main menu screens. It goes back to the system menu with a DRE message when attempting to load anything in-game. Is this a common problem that can be fixed by a quick cleaning, or is there more to it? I'd rather not even bother opening-up the system if the fix isn't going to be simple or cheap.

Yes, it is common especially if your Xbox has the Thomson drive (there are websites that show you how to determine which drive you have). Typically the drive needs to be replaced which isn't necessarily a difficult job but does involve sourcing a new drive and opening the system to replace it. I don't believe that there have been many instances of these drives being rehabbed as they were pretty unreliable.

Good news, guys; it's a 2003 Samsung drive. The laser was CAKED with some kind of light-brown fuzz! It had embed itself around the laser module, creating a sort of hair-shield. And for the life of me, I can't figure out why I didn't take a picture. The system was literally sparkling on the inside except for a heavily dust-smeared fan. I tested it initially at the local game store, so I'll be bringing it back for another go. Looks like it'll be okay! The hair was easily removed with an alcohol-dipped Q-tip and a pair of (carefully used) tweezers.

If you can find one. After the 360 came out, the original xbox parts started to dry up.

This is why I have three working systems with Samsung drives.

Most of the time the lens just needs cleaning and from the sound of it bigfoot was shedding 24/7 with the dvd-rom spread wide open.

Unfortunately all the drives will fail due to the drive motor, and the disc tray won't open. Mine has this problem sometimes. Why I prefer static drives like the PS2 slim.

I have yet to test it again, actually. It didn't come with any cords. I've got some coming though. In any case, I'm fairly certain it will work now. :)
