Whoa, this actually sold? I had known about the auction through GameSniped, but didn't think it would sell. Any way to tell who bought it? Just curious if the purchase is legit or just somebody being an ass.
Also, the listing says a complete N64 collection, but there are only 220 games being offered. That's over one hundred shy of a complete collection.

My money is on some kid being a jealous dickbag. I seriously can't believe that collection sold. We were just talking about this auction on the cover project. I don't even think all that stuff is actually worth 1.2M, even if you broke it up and sold everything separately.

And now it's on Yahoo's front page. Great... That officially means I'm going to get e-mail / facebook link bombed by friends saying, "ZOMG! Did you see this?" as though they think they're more informed than me. Sheeeeesh... The things I put up with.

We'll see if adol gets the money for all that. If he does, I'm selling my stuff.

"As well, please keep in mind i had dozens of thousands of copies of those games in hands during the last 20 years, and i only kept, each time, the VERY BEST copies for my personal collection"
This is good too, E-bay asking me "Have one to sell? Sell it yourself"

That collection is insane. Did the owner have a wife? Children? Or were his children his games? His wife, a famicom?
Collecting takes a lot of time and money!

There are about 387 N64 games worldwide, so yeah, I don't know what that is... I was thinking it was a compelte Japanese N64 collection, but I come up with only 197 Japanese releases... is that number off? If there are actually 220 Japanese N64 releases, that would explain it. There are a lot of N64 games that were only released in the US and Europe, you see.

I'd settle for a couple of hundred million less. =)

Maybe Adol can lower the prices of the other games he's selling to something more reasonable now. :P
Yeah I wish he'd worded it better, they are not complete collections they are only complete Japanese collections, except SMS. That's a huge difference.

That's how I understood it. Not that it matters either way.

Of all people, my DAD told me about this tonight. When he said Sega, NEC, then France, I knew it was Adol. I can't believe he sold out of the hobby. I really never thought I'd see the day. One of the world's greatest collectors ever. I'm shocked. I feel sad thinking that collection will get broken up. It really should be with another collector. Maybe it is, I don't know, but still, I can only hope.

Omg !!!
I've heard the winner didn't pay up as he thought they're complete collections.

If I were rich as f&@#, I would not buy an entire game collection. No way of knowing what it's REALLY worth without valuing all the games individually. Takes the fun out of collecting. But I would buy some games off of him. That would be awesome having a game once owned by Adol. Plus, video game collecting is a middle-class thing, for us that drive Honda Accords (like myself) and not Rolls Royces. The smart idea would be to sell every game individually. That way, a few thousand people get games, split between mostly middle class, a few working class, and a few wealthy, instead of one person who if they're spending $1.2 million has to be STUPIDLY rich. These games, by and large, belong to the middle class.

Do you know how much work that would take? I can't say that I'd be willing to write up auctions for thousands of games individually. That would be a massive undertaking.

Certainty enough work to justify that asking price.
Regardless it seemed like a bad deal, I think someone did the numbers and it came out to about 130 a game on average. Even as sealed complete collections that seems like a massive increase over the real average cost of the games, that is only sorta justified by having so many collections for sale at once. I guess this would be useful for someone with a lotta cash wanting complete sets quickly or some kind of mesuem service looking for complete collections.

When an auction gets popular across the Internet, it attracts bids from people who have no intention of paying. They bid because they want to "feel like they're a part of something." I wouldn't be surprised if the guy has to relist the auction several times.

In glancing at that, unless it was someone rich who truly wanted a HUGE collection, I don't see it being paid. Usually with giant collections, the most likely people to buy them are stores. Just in glancing through everything, each of the complete collections would have to be worth just under $50,000 on average. A couple of the larger collections, I could see this being just about right, but for the majority of them it is way overpriced.
If you're super rich and want an amazing video game collection, it would probably be worth the premium to hop in to something like this, but otherwise... I could see this getting legitimately $250k-$400k from a retailer / reseller who would break it up, or a collector that got a quick large loan.

Takes the fun out of collecting.Agreed - if I had millions to blow on stuff, I'd rather acquire collections piece by piece and enjoy each addition. The difference is, I could afford to buy that CIB Meteorites. :) If I were a millionaire I'd still go to garage sales and check out Flea World's 3-for-$2 2600 games...
