So someone recently purchased a game from me and in the note of the sale details, they sent a request to change the address to a location in a different state. I refunded their purchase and then said if they would like me to ship to a different address they can change their shipping address and repurchase it.

The seller is now outraged I wouldn't ship to an unconfirmed address, did I handle this poorly?

No, they probably tried to scam you so you did the right thing.

Here's a transcript of the back and forth. I think you guys should get a kick out of this.

Dear vintagevideogames1977,

I have a policy of not changing addresses. Please understand that some people run scams that way. If you would like to repurchase this item after changing your address to the one you requested, I have no problem shipping to the new one after you repurchase it. In the mean time, I have refunded your purchase.

Dear wingzrowdirect,

Thats not fair buddy. I purchase items for people all of the time. And... I had paid you for the item. this will result in Poor feedback for you. Thanks for nothing.

Dear vintagevideogames1977,

Feel free to leave whatever feedback you believe is fair, but I cannot ship to an unconfirmed address, and it is unreasonable for you to think that I should.

As I said before, if you change your shipping address and repurchase the game ( I relisted it )then I can ship it to the new address, otherwise there's nothing I can do.

Dear wingzrowdirect,

Listen buddy. I have been doing this for a long time. I chose to purchase this item. I Put the address in the proper place for you to ship the item to. Then also attached a note to you asking you to ship this item to this address. It is the same address as shows up when you try to print a label for this item. If you think for a second that I would scam you.... but yet pay you for the item... you must be out of your mind. What scammer pays for an item?? come on. Really. I will purchase from another buyer now. I look forward to leaving your feedback in 7 days. Take care.

This is the address that would print out on your shipping label normally, and is the address on your shipping details.

"Matt's Vintage Video Game Center
(rest of address omitted for forums)
United States"

and this is the address you said you wanted me to change it to in the note you sent me.

"Please ship to address listed as

(rest of address omitted for forums)
Peru IL 61354."

One address is in Illinois, and one is in Ohio. They're two completely different addresses.

new message, he admits it was his mistake but decides to buy from somewhere else?

Dear wingzrowdirect,

Ok, I see. I changed it from my address at the top to the Illinois address. I do that every time that I buy for someone else. I see that something must have went wrong there and I don't know why exactly. The Ohio address should not have even showed up and I not understanding why it did. But... its fine then. I have already purchased from another seller who will have no problem with this shipment I am sure. And, I did make sure that the address went through correctly and saved correctly this time. Possibly it did not save or something. I don't know. Well, forget about it then. I will just shop elsewhere. But since it is a system error or glitch or something I will not fault you for that and it will not reflect negitively on your account. Thanks for you time. Send me a request to cancell and I will cancell this transaction so that it will dissapear from you and me. Good luck selling. Ebay is great.

Oh, and I do know what you mean about the scammers... I get it. but If I or anyone else was going to scam you by asking you to send it somewhere else.... the conversations between us are viewable by Ebay cutomer service reps and also the tracking shows when and where an item is delivered. I have had people ask me to ship other places before and as long as I get paid and as long as the address is valid and a U.S. address...... I see no issues with making my customers happy. Just an F.Y.I for the future.

Admittedly I didn't even read it all. It's not your policy, both eBay and Paypal forbid this behavior. You're just playing by the rules. Why don't you tell the pinhead to review the rules he needs to be playing by?

"What kind of scam involves the buyer paying?"

Hmm let me think..

Buyer tricks seller to ship to an unconfirmed address that doesn't match what the Paypal payment dictates, buyer claims the item never arrived, Paypal puts the blame on the seller for shipping incorrectly and not following policy, buyer gets both item and money.

What an asshole.

I have had this occasion occur before. The buyer was happy I was following the rules to the letter and had no problem accepting a refund and paying again under another address. Go figure. Oh, that guy also left very enthusiastic feedback for me haha. :)

...I read the rest. OK this time it wasn't a complete asshole but you get my point from the above explanation.

You could've just refunded his payment and asked him to send the payment again with the correct address. I've done this a few times. No big deal.

That's EXACTLY what I did.

You didn't say that.

"I have a policy of not changing addresses. Please understand that some people run scams that way. In the mean time, I have refunded your purchase."

Yes, the words you used matter. You should've refunded the money and explained that he'd have to send payment again instead of asking him to repurchase it (even if you didn't mean it like that.)
