FreakZone Games will deliver retro adventure game MANOS: The Hands of Fate to iOS devices on July 26. Based on the awful 1966 cult movie of the same name, the game has players controlling Mike through locales inspired by the film, as well as settings from other movies.

According to FreakZone's site (http://freakzonegames.tumblr.com/), "MANOS honours bad movies and games and borrows a lot of conventions from famous badness of the past, while at the same time bringing them all together to create something good." The game contains references to multiple films and games such as Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, along with Easter eggs dedicated specifically to Mystery Science Theater 3000.

The development team plans to release the NES-inspired game on Android devices, including the Kindle Fire, later this year.http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif (http://www.joystiq.com)MANOS: The Hands of Fate lands on iOS July 26 (http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/21/manos-the-hands-of-fate-lands-on-ios-july-26/) originally appeared on Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com) on Sat, 21 Jul 2012 12:00:00 EST. Looks good to me, but here's hoping for a version that uses a controller someday.

The dev has said he wants to release this on Steam and possibly XBLA.

Will the title screen feature a Frank Frazetta of Frank Zappa?

Haha, this looks pretty cool. I couldn't find anywhere on the dev's website how they went about acquiring the Manos license or if they bothered/needed to at all, but it sounds like the people behind this had a lot of fun doing it. There's a lot of potential for kitschy and entertaining games that dust off old and forgotten properties, I'd say.

The past-gen big budget adaptations of The Thing and The Warriors honoured the source material in a really classy way, but imagine if a movie like, oh, I don't know.. Hard Boiled was reimagined as a Genesis-styled run-'n'-gun. Or The Princess Bride was turned into an NES-flavoured overhead action adventure. Or Death Wish 3 was transformed into a CPS-1 beat-'em-up. You know, giving cult movies the sort of video game treatment they might have received near the time of their release, built within the constraints of popular hardware of the period. That would be awfully neat, I think.

There's no real need to clear any copyrights - Manos and everything about it is entirely in the public domain.

This isn't the first Manos game, apparently there was one made based on the movie with RPGMaker... and a beat'em up.

Right, I half assumed Manos must be in the public domain. Thanks for clearing that up.
