someone made a patch that recreates the game shown in sfc proto shots. so far its pretty cool and i dont like hacks at all.

heres a scan of super mario 4 when the super famicom was unveiled (taken from chris the disgruntled gamers site) and for comparison theres shots from the patch.

How did you play it? I've got SNES9x and it can't see the file. It's an IPS file and SNES roms are SMC files. Just wondering...

You need to apply the patch file to the ROM.
Download LunarIPS, then use that to apply the patch to a ROM. (99% of the time for SMW hacks, it has to be a US version with a header).

So it's not really a proto,then?

no, but it is a incredible recreation of the proto shown in the mags. i visited each of those levels from the scan and paused the game and couldnt tell a difference between the two.

I would love to play this, but can barely figure out how to turn on my laptop, let alone patch a rom.

This hack was uploaded way back in 2009. I played a little bit of it a long time ago. That is a good site to go to if you want a lot of Mario hacks. There are just so many it is hard to determine which ones actually play well and which ones are just a mess.

Why call it a proto if it's NOT a proto? Jeez, what a letdown.

Felt the same when I read the title. I was freakin' excited as hell, then read what it really was, then lost interest. Maybe "proto fan creation" would be better.

Well the title does say "proto recreation" as opposed to plain "proto", so I pretty much knew exactly what to expect when I opened the thread.
Interesting stuff, for sure.

It didn't say that earlier. It said it was a prototype.

So if this was first uploaded in 2009, has something happened since?

your both right kinda. i edited the title after i saw it was causing confusion. back to the game tho, i just finished it and it was very cool. its beta-ish in that you cant finish it and theres no final boss or other land. it starts and ends with the mushroom shaped isle seen in the pics.

Other people on SMW Central probably made more hacks since then. That's all I can think of. That was the other thing that was weird. In the OP it makes it sound like this just happened when it was a few years ago.

One of the craziest hacks I saw was a Super Mario Kart hack where they changed the level layout but didn't bother to change the path that the enemy karts took. I got to a scene where there were a bunch of the characters just repeatedly slamming into the wall in Bowser's castle non-stop. I was laughing pretty hard and I tried seeing what happened if I tried to push them back on track by running into them. Big mistake - my coins went flying!

And that's fine. Just be more careful with your forum thread titles, s'all. :P
