After we saw this post about a game collection selling for big bucks (when it really didn't). I think it would be interesting to ask all the members here.

How big is your collection?

And what is bulk of your collection in terms of games to a console?

and what is your most prized gaming possession?
Keep in mind I am not asking you what is your most valuable possession thats already been asked a million times over.
I am asking what if you had to sell EVERYTHING what would you find hardest to part with?

I for instance have 479 gaming related items I could catalog on RFGeneration
446 games
33 console and console accessory related items

The bulk of my collection is NES stuff.

I think my favorite item I have is my copy of Zombies Ate My Neighbors for SNES. Its kinda common so no market value really. But I just love the game and could never give it up.

Probably in the 1200 game range... more if you count download/virtual console.

My most prized collection would probably be my boxed copy of Mario 3. I frikkin love that game.

I'm too lazy to go count my games but I'm sure it's hovering around 400-700 total. I also have over 20 different console, portable and plug-in systems, more than enough to keep me busy trying to play them all. As for my most prized item, it's probably my demo disc collection. I have a complete set for Xbox, a bajillion for PS1 and PS2 and almost every Dreamcast demo, among others. I even have a few that don't exist, which just means I can't find any info on them or anyone else that owns them.

I'm at 1200-some. The most games for any single system would be PlayStation, at around 225. If you want to talk pure sentimentality, my specific copy of Donkey Kong Country for SNES that I got from my grandma would probably be the hardest to part with since it sums up to me how sweet of a woman she was. She gave it to me completely out of the blue on launch day, just because she had heard me going on about it so much. I wasn't at all expecting it, and it was the only video game I ever got as a gift in my childhood that wasn't for my birthday or a holiday. If you want to talk "prized" in terms of stuff in my collection that I really adore and love to show off, even if it's not the most valuable, I'd go with my personalized stuff, like my postcard from CyberConnect2 and my autograph from composer Koji Hayama (I have other autographs from composers, but those I got at convention signings so they're not so unique and not personalized either).

I'm around 400-500 range in games, I have too many sentimental games to really choose one..
Goldeneye on 64 was given to me by my Grandpa on Christmas, I remember sneaking a peak under the wrapping paper the night before and going crazy with excitement.
I spent hundreds of hours playing Perfect Dark on 64 with my friends through the years.
Little Nemo: Dream Master on NES was always a game I could never win as a kid, until a few months ago.
The list goes on, I love them all.

The shear numbers here makes me feel a bit.. inadequate. :p

PS3 - 42
PS2 - 10
PS1 - 17
PSP - 22
Vita - 8

Wii - 2
SNES - 3
DS - 8
3DS - 6
Advance - 11
GB/GBC - 3

Sega Genesis - 15
Sega Saturn - 210
Sega Dreamcast - 4

Total : Roughly 355 +/- 20

This is not counting digital releases, which would increase this number quite a bit. That and most of the Saturn games I have are complete crap so I hardly ever count those.

I have somewhere between 2050-2100 games (not counting anything downloadable), and I'm not sure how many consoles in total. All of the major ones since the 2600, I guess.

It's pretty tough for me to pin down my most valued item. I want to say my Turbo Duo though. The thing is, I ALWAYS wanted one since it was released, but I never owned own until around 2001 when my girlfriend bought me one, brand new. It was a huge deal since it wasn't easy to get a hold of one new anymore by then. Well, I lost the box to the system in a house fire, but the CD drive stopped working on it, too, before then. I hadn't even gotten any CD games for it in the short while I had it, so needless to say I was bummed. At any rate, she managed to get me another brand new one a few years later, I think around 2006 or so. She had to order it from Germany, I believe, and it wasn't cheap.

She's given me TOO many awesome gifts for my collection over the years, but I know how difficult and expensive it was for her to track down a new Duo for me, so it's probably is my number one pick. There are several runners up though, like my First4Fugures Classic Sonic statue, the Pac-Man plush that my nephew won in a claw machine and gave to me when he was 3, and my hand made Crab Meat and Motobug Sonic enemy props.

Rough breakdown of my game collection from another database. It's less than my actual collection, but it's close:

Playstation 2 15% (298)
Genesis 7% (144)

Pretty small compared to others here.

I want a lot of games, though.

With all the classics, I often wonder about new-game-bashing. Are there enough years in life for 20th century games alone?

About 260 PS2 and 90 PS1 titles.

Can fit them all in my room, that's a plus.

Multiple thousands and that's still small potatoes compared to some others. Big chunks focus on PSOne, PS2 & DS. Reputable numbers include 360, XBox, GameCube and a number of other systems mostly newer, some older.

Mine's ~1500, would have been ~3000, but due to moving from one country to another I halved.
I also have ~2000 gaming magazines, again would have been ~3000, but magazines are heavy for transporting so some had to go.

My best item?
Sega TeraDrive
VCS cib Mangia', cib X Man, all 3 Mythicon...etc
cib 3DO Blaster

990 spread over 12 consoles/handhelds, with a lust for more. True 25-30 or so are Wii VC and PSN, but the rest are cart and CD/DVD.

My collection is MUCH smaller than it was five years ago. I trimmed a lot of the fat when I moved back to the bay area and over the past few years I've gotten rid of more and more stuff. I suppose I could say it all began due to moving and even before that wanting a little extra cash for non-gaming stuff. Honestly though the last few purges were to create better accessibility for everything that I did keep (my "5 year + / 5 year -" rule) and to refocus collecting to platforms that interest me the most. This saw things like the Vectrex, Atari 7800 (Friday actually for that one), Lynx, Colecovision, XBox, and others be wiped out completely. Also large portions of the game libraries for other platforms to be shaved down, most notably the 3DO, Saturn, Master System, Famicom, and Genesis.

I don't keep a cumulative total between all platforms but for most games on a platform it would be the NES with 418, followed by the Atari 2600 at 264.

My most prized possession is a loose copy of Grand Prix for the Atari 2600. Not particularly interesting to anyone but me, it belonged to my uncle originally. However it holds the distinction of being the first video game I ever played, the actual physical cartridge from then. This makes it completely irreplaceable to me.

Other than that I'd say this clock...

Which I really need to take some more recent pictures of, although I say that every time I bring it up. Need to do that tomorrow finally. LOL

Around 2,000 give or take, all CIB or Sealed. Full N64 CIB set, and around 200-300 from each of NES, SNES, Gameboy, PS1, then about 100 or so on each of Genesis / Xbox / Gamecube. And a spattering of DS / 360.

The longer I collect, the less attachment I have to any of them. I'm just doing it as a hobby in my spare time. If something comes up in the future where I need to raise funds to pay for urgent care of myself, my parents, my fiancee or my future children, they're just games and I won't miss them. I'll know that I'll always be able to get back into it at a later date.

There's two games I could never part with no matter what, that's Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. I spent so much time speedrunning those as a kid and it's so gratifying to pop them in for a walk down memory lane. Whether it's just shooting inept guards or looking back on some of my best times on certain levels, it's always refreshing. No amount of money would replace that.

After we saw this post about a game collection selling for big bucks (when it really didn't). I think it would be interesting to ask all the members here.

How big is your collection?

According to GameTZ, I just surpassed the 3K mark. That number includes console, portable, and PC releases but not digital games such as iPod, Steam, and Virtual Console purchases. The actual number of titles is off by a bit though as I know I have several titles that were missed in listing and I've been far too lazy to figure out which ones.

And what is bulk of your collection in terms of games to a console?

My biggest collection of games for one system is for the Nintendo DS by far. From the looks of it, portables make up nearly 1/3 of my entire collection.

and what is your most prized gaming possession?

at one point i had around 25 consoles and over 600 physical games....had about 130 snes games.....but unfortunately due to life financial circumstances i've had to sell practically everything just to help pay my bills.....i'm not unemployed or anything...just had some very big expense last couple years......

i dont have any of my retro consoles and games any more....i do have my 360, ps3, wii, psp, vita, and original xbox....probably around 160 games or so not including downloads on xbla or virtual console.....

i do plan to start recollecting whenever my finances get straightened out. But i think i'm gonna focus on just the systems i'm actually completely interested in. The snes, NES, and the genesis. i dont think i'll worry about owning every possible game for those systems...just the great classics

My rfgen list includes 1944 games, although I suspect enough have not gotten logged that I'd pretty easily reach 2000. I've got most major systems since the 2600 in good working order. My hardware list has about 100, but that includes controllers and stuff if I remember right. The biggest portion is NES with 580 titles, and that is my favorite system to collect for. Given that, I'd say my StarForce proto/review copy is my favorite single item. Just cool to have something pretty unique that I found myself for a few bucks at a thrift store.

I'd also have a real hard time parting with my lcd collection and Game & Watches in particular, even though I rarely play them. I just like 'em a lot. Really need to get the old Bandai Burgertime game I had when I was a kid, but it doesn't show up on ebay very often at all and has gotten expensive.

Most other stuff I think I could sell, and I've actually been toying with selling off my PS1 collection in particular once I manage to sell off all the misc stuff that has piled up that I never intended to keep in the first place.

I have somewhere around 1000 games covering about 20 or so formats. The largest number for any one format is either playstation 1 or snes.

My favorite item(s) are maps I made for Dark Wizard, Warsong, Golden Axe Warrior and Brigandine (using excel).
Since these are reproducible, what I would most hate to sell are my strategy rpg games - that is my faovrite genre by far.

I've downsized A LOT in the last couple of years. I'm probably in the 400 - 450 range now with the bulk of it being for the Atari consoles, the Tandy Color computer and a smattering of NES, SNES, Genesis, TG16, SMS, and Colecovision.

I have roughly 200 games.

The bulk of my games are Atari 2600 games because I bought a HUGE lot of them with a console.

My favorite and most precious item has to be my Complete in box copy of Toe Jam and Earl because it was a huge part of my childhood and to still have it today is wonderful

Close to 500 games, not counting downloads, and about 18 systems. Biggest part of my collection is probably Genesis/Mega Drive, counting 32X and CD it's a little over 100 titles. As for most prized of my collection it's a tie between the PC Engine Duo R and the Neo Geo AES, it's hard for me to decide on just one since these were two consoles I had wanted for a long time. As for my favorite item it's another tie, Dracula X on the PC Engine and my CIB Japanese Neo Geo AES.

I have close to 300 games, 16 systems and 20 d/l games. The biggest chunk of my collection is PS2, with over 50 games. Ironically it's far from my favorite system (that would be SNES). Picking just one item to keep... is so difficult! If you twisted my arm, my gut reaction would be to keep my launch day copy of Final Fantasy VII.

I'd kick myself later for not keeping my mint boxed copy of Super Mario Bros. 3, the only NES game to survive my childhood with the box intact. Also, more kicks for Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, Sonic 2, Sonic 1 and launch day Sonic Adventure. All sentimental choices, mind you.

The largest my collection ever got was around the 1700 games range with almost all the US released systems, counting multiple forms maybe somewhere between 50-70 units. I re-sold / traded back in probably a thousand of those loose games and ended up with probably 600-700 complete in box games when I was done. Then I had to sell pretty much half my collection almost half a year ago. I let go of a lot of great stuff, but I was surpised how much it hasn't really hurt me to do so. I still have lots of different games to play and it lets me focus a bit better. I still have more Playstation and Playstation 2 stuff than anything else right now.

I was in the upwards numbers around 2400 just under two years ago. Now I'm between 200 and 300, 20 of so being systems. The only thing I probably would not get rid of is my limited edition Space Channel 5 statue it took me like 7 years to track one down locally.

Its not super valuable but I like it.

I have a grand total of 236 (not including digital), so not as large as some of the guys here ^-^ The most I have for is the Wii, with 43 titles (which largely reflects the upswing in my finances this gen. It will probably hit 50 by the time I'm done with the Wii.

The breakdown if you're interested:

Master System 3
Megadrive 25
32X 1
Sega CD 2
Saturn 19
Dreamcast 10
GameGear 7

Snes 1
N64 5
GameCube 24
Wii 43
Gameboy 4
Gameboy Colour 7
Gameboy Advance 14
DS 27
3DS 3

Playstation 21
Playstation 2 6
PSP 4

Neo-Geo Pocket 10

If I still had a lot of my childhood games, my MS and Snes count would be a lot higher. But now I've either bought them digitally or had my fill of them through other means. I could probably get rid of a good 20-30 games without being upset. After that there'd have to be a very good reason for it.

Last time I counted (which was about a year ago), I was somewhere in the range of 3,600 non-floppy disk based games (probably another few hundred to a thousand if I counted those). Couldn't tell you how many consoles I have but if I were to guess I'd say in the 90-100+ range, probably another 25-30 handhelds, and at least 50 8/16 bit computers. I really should try to catalogue this mess.

I kept a database for quite some time, but I eventually grew tired of dealing with my original choice of format.

Looking at what others have, I'd say this is about average.

Just over 4,700 CIB games, and somewhere around 80 CIB consoles. I haven't really bought much this year - only about 250 games. That, after averaging 1,000 games a year for the previous three, is quite a decline.

Well, at some point you're just gonna run outta stuff that you want to buy, so that makes sense. I mean, at about 5K games, you've amassed a pretty significant portion of what's out there. There's obviously a lot more, don't get me wrong, but I can't imagine that you're hunting down tons of commons at this point ;)

On a side note, 1K per year?! WOW! That's intense. Have you only been collecting for a few years, or did you just get really serious about it all of a sudden?

I've been collecting for about 11 years. I consider my first purchase on eBay (Sept. '01) to mark the start of that adventure. But I was in high school and college for the first 5 years of that, so I wasn't able to increase the size too much. Over that time I went from about 75 games to around 500. For my first two years out of school I didn't purchase too much. I had actually developed a fear of spending money, and I was still only collecting for Sega consoles. In that time it expanded to a modest 1,200 games.

After that I got on an explosive kick, initially driven by the spread into non-Sega consoles, then by the ridiculous and obsessive desire to have EVERYTHING EVER. Those next 3.5 years it swelled by 3,250 games to 4,450 last Feb. And I've since only bumped it up to 4,700.

I'm actually recatalogging it in preparation of a massive sell-off. I'd just rather not have it anymore. The hobby has lost its charm. That, and I don't play them. I find games boring. So they all just sit on the shelves and collect dust.

Only on Digital Press is a collection of 1200 games "modest", haha.

And only on Digital Press do you come across people with 4500 games who don't even like playing games. It's a strange world.

Isn't he? I mean he doesn't even have any tracking that he keeps up with.

Oh bah to both of you ;) I keep a list, but it's out of date. It's *mostly* accurate I just need to go through it at some point. I've been doing those 'life' things so I haven't kept up on it.

(and you forget.. I'm seeing both of you today so I'l be sure to smack you around).

I'm not sure I would call myself a collector in the same sense as someone who's always actively on the hunt, so it's a little different for me. Most of my games were given to me as gifts. I haven't actually taken the time the count my games but it's got to be somewhere in the 40-50 range with GameCube having the most games. My collection of systems however has been picking up speed ever since I've learned about clones and Android systems.

I like the idea of being able to get a bunch of systems in different shapes and sizes for cheap, it's like getting a bunch of new toys or something. They might not do anything new but they're fun for the novelty and to see people's reactions when I take them in public. I wish there were more lightweight budget/plug-and-play units like AtGames' notorious emulated clones. The wacky designs and cheap toy-like build quality is part of the charm. The Arcade Nanos or Gophers are the kind of thing that would work great as something you'd find in a cereal box or a Happy Meal.

i havent counted exactly, but i have got a couple of complete collections (for multiple regions) and a fair amount gamecube, ps1, ps2, dreamcast, etc. Not counting doubles, i think it is 3k-5k. Counting doubles, well... Still need to keep track of my own stuff via my own database, as online databases simply don't cover a lot of stuff (pal or otherwise) or are quite inaccurate :(

Well, for me it's

Games in collection > Space available to store said collection

That's the bottom line, really.

Currently I have a rather modest collection of 503 games total, not including downloadable titles on XBLA. 10 consoles total. Nearly half of those games (204) are for the NES/Famicom, so I think it's safe to say that my favorite to collect for is the NES, which is technically correct. Truth is, though, I love collecting Famicom games. I'm actually looking to pare down the NES half of that set soon, especially if one deal I'm the process of making goes through.

After that comes the Atari VCS, with 73 games. That's only because I bought a whole bunch of games in bulk a couple years ago, though. That's followed by the Genesis/Mega Drive with 70 games. Then the SNES with 44, PS1 with 31, and after that the rest of the consoles range from the 20s down to 1.

It appears that my collection is far smaller than most on here. Mine is probably around 240-250 with most of the games and accessories coming from the NES. I have 5 systems total

Honestly, you're probably on par with most members here. I think a lot folks with "smaller" collections just don't post in this thread, probably because it's a tad overwhelming when you see these 5K+ collections @_@

Yeah, DP definitely skews perspectives. If I let people in real life or even people on other game forums know that I have 1200+ games, they usually shit bricks, but it's no big whoop around here. It's both a blessing and a curse. It's great to be around collectors you can relate to, who won't think you are a hoarder freak, but a lot of collectors get too desensitized. People dig themselves into holes by getting too much too fast, they lose their interest in the games themselves, they're not impressed by anything but the very best of finds, etc. That's why I can barely stand the "Finds" topics these days. People find stuff that I would be extremely happy to find, at excellent prices, and they're like "Yeah, nothing too exciting today". And with that kind of attitude permeating the topic, I get the impression that people with normal finds are scared off from posting since even the common stuff posted is usually bought at unusually low prices. It's to the point where if you're paying what I'd consider a normal, fair price, like, say, 3 bucks for your average NES cart that isn't a sports title, people think you're getting ripped off since you should be getting 50 NES games for $20 with Contra, some Mega Man games, some Dragon Warrior games, etc. mixed in and then comment "Just another ho-hum find". :/

Personally, in terms of collection sizes, I think anything over 100 is sizeable. I mean, sure, if you're buying cheap games, it doesn't take that much money to buy a few lots or whatever and quickly add 100 games to your collection, but I look at it from the perspective of someone not collecting. How many people who aren't would own over 100 games? I mean, I have a shelf loaded with DVDs and Blu-rays, but I'm sure I don't even have 100. I'm not a collector, so I don't want mountains of them or any that I don't care much about.

QFT.

Although, I find myself being a LOT more deal hunter, and WAY less player as of late. Something about the hunt really gets me pumped! Also, it's summer and I don't really wanna stay locked up in my basement playing games all day long. Winter will be here soon enough, and that will change :P

I think you are exaggerating quite a bit about the finds thread, but maybe I'm just a finds thread fanboy. And yeah, I've said 'nothing much today' in that thread sometimes on decent stuff, sometimes on really nothing much, and sometimes sarcastically because it is clearly something much. I guess you are right in one sense that I am not as often excited by my finds, even when they are quite good, because it is harder to find stuff to add to my collection now and a lot of finds are just for trading/flipping so I can save up to pay 'retail' for something. So I guess I get the blessing/curse thing you are saying. Another side of the finds thread is that plenty of times people are really excited about (financially) mediocre finds for some personal or sentimental reason, and I love reading about that stuff just as much as the sealed Snatcher for $5.

Yeah, I admit that I may be making it sound a bit worse than it is. I just would really like to see more enthusiasm in general on DP, especially in the Finds topics. I do like browsing those threads from time to time, but it's a real turn off coming across those kinds of jaded comments. Maybe there's a twinge of jealousy to it, since getting a good find and acting like it's nothing is a slap in the face to those who would love to get a find like that and may be struggling to find decent deals at all. Although I've gotten my share of great deals, so it's not like I've never been on the other side. But for me, if I get a good price on a high quality game that's been missing from my collection or if I find something on the rare side and/or worth a good $20+ more than what I paid, then I always act happy and excited, even if it's just going to be a flip. Maybe the difference between me and others is that game hunting hasn't become a routine for me. I spend the majority of my time in NYC, where there are practically no thrift stores, garage sales, etc., so virtually all of my game shopping is online here. It's only when I visit family that I get to hit up suburbia and do some serious game hunting, so I still feel the thrill of the hunt.

I had a 1,500+ collection for a long time. At that point it becomes quite tricky to manage, at least it does in a 1,500-2,000 square foot home.

Well, for one, it usually means a huge backlog, haha. That is, unless the collector has completely given up or lost interest in the idea of playing them all. Size-wise, it really depends on what the person is collecting, and if he/she is insistent on having everything complete or not. If someone is big on portables and is cool with loose carts, even a 1000+ collection could be quite manageable.
