I'd like to buy a brand new PlayStation 2, but I'm not having any luck finding one. I've tried the usual suspects - Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Fry's. I've called a few GameStops, and none of them carry them, either. I also tried Play N Trade and a local classic store (Console Game Exchange). Any ideas?

Most Best Buy's around here got rid of theirs but a few still carry them. You can also still pick them up right now at Toys R Us (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3293922&prodFindSrc=pn). I know Target clearanced out their remaining stock at the end of last year and Sears will probably be doing the same pretty soon.

I hadn't considered Toys R Us. Unfortunately, there's no store within 50 miles of me (the furthest area it will search) that has any. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
I also tried Sears.com, and they don't list it.

I had a heck of a problem finding one earlier this year. Many places around here hadn't stocked them in quite sometime and many of the usual online suspects also no longer carried new PS2 consoles.
Finally after weeks of searching, the empty spot in the case at the local Wal-Mart for PS2's had a new console sitting there one night after many weeks of being empty. Picked it up and the next time I was there, the price sticker was gone and different items were stocked there which to me indicates I picked up the last PS2 to be sold there.
Now's the time to get a new one if someone wants one. Just getting more and more difficult and I suspect North American distributors are not recieving new stock from Sony anymore and are just selling what they already have on hand.
At least I didn't wait too long like I did with the original Xbox and backwards compatible Wii's. They both seemed to dry up seemingly overnight leaving me without brand new spares to store away.

They are on Amazon.
You can buy them on Amazon from a third party seller at well above MSRP, but Amazon has not sold them directly for months now.

Exactly. I don't mind paying more than the old $99 list price, but I'm not paying $250.

For whatever reason, I missed picking up an extra PS2 during it's last days at retail. I was kind of hoping for them to hit $50, like the PS1 did in it's last days, and held out too long.
Fortunately, I'm headed to the "Land That Time Forgot" (i.e. rural Midwest) next month and plan on hitting up my two favorite time (http://www.kmart.com)-warp (http://www.pamida.com) retail chains. I've told stories here before about the retro console goldmine that resides in the hometown of my in-laws. It's never been a disappointing trip. I plan on picking up a few DS Lites, PSP-2000's (they still have a 1000 factory sealed IIRC), and 1 or 2 PS2's. Don't even get me started on the dusty wall of GBA/PS2/Xbox/GC games.

Same here. I was thinking that they would at least go to $79.99 or maybe a screen/console bundle like Sony did for the PSOne. I should have just coughed up the $99 and kept it in the closet.

At one of my Targets they actually did get clearanced down to $49.99. The only reason I passed was because I already had a slim US PS2 and was looking for a Japanese slim. I told myself I would still pick it up from Target if it got down to $25 but it never did because people bought them at $49.99. In comparison, the Gamecube got clearanced down to $25 at Target and Sears and they still weren't flying off shelves so I had time to grab two Metroid Prime bundles at that price. But getting back to the PS2, Sears and Toys R Us are the only stores that still sell them around here and they both still have them marked at $99, even the white Singstar bundle.

I found one!
I went to a local independent game store that I had never heard of until a post on this board in the events forum. When I asked if they had any new PS2s in stock, I was told the Wal-Mart next door had one. In fact, they had 4.
So now I'm going to hijack my own thread with a couple of questions:
1) I'm using digital audio out. If I plug the cable all the way into the PS2, I get no sound. I have to pull it back out just a little, and then I get sound. This is the same cable that I use with my 360, and I plug it in all the way on that system. Do you think I have a bad unit?
2) I'm a bit confused about video settings. I'm using a component (blue/green/red) cable, and I have the system set for 16:9. I also have that input on my TV set to 16:9. But when I play a game, it looks stretched out. If I change my TV to 4:3, it looks better, but of course then I have the bars on the side. What are the best settings?

Most PS2 games are not widescreen. That setting can't have useful effect unless running software who supports it.
Little you can do except try hacked versions, whatever the compatibility of that is.

Is there a reason to buy a brand new PS2 at this time? It's a pita to configure the games on that system. Such stupid short sightedness by Sony. To have to go into options and turn on texturing for PS1 every time you turn on the system is just idiotic. Progressive scan usually has to be activated when the game is loading, by holding triangle and X, which again is pure idiocy. I could see the big old PS2's not having the functionality to save these settings, but no excuse on the slim. Heck, the XBOX could set these things back in 2001.

Not to sound like a smartass...but to play PS2 games. If the PS3 had backwards countability anymore, then maybe not. It seems like the exact right time, when the games are still plentiful, cheap, and easy to find.

I returned the one I had and got another, and it's the exact same thing. Either that cable I have is made to work special with the 360 adapter it goes with, or that's just how the PS2 is made. I'm guessing the former. Oh well, it works.
Unfortunately, I left the Gottlieb Pinball Collection in it when I returned it. Doh!

Try any indy game stores in your area. Maybe even order a refurb through Sony if you can? They're pretty much new and come with a standard warranty I think?

Wow I didn't realize new ps2s had recently become rare and hard to find. I am especially worried that there are no 99 dollar new ps2 slims sold on amazon now. I was hoping there would be another price drop on new ps2s and Id maybe buy 2 or 3 to save for the distant future. Hope my slim ps2 I bought 2 years ago lasts me a long time then.

I bought a second one to have as a backup. At $100, it wasn't cost prohibitive. I figure if I want to, I can sell it and make a little money.
There were a lot of great arcade compilations released for this system. One of them that I got was the Midway Classics vol. 2. There are a lot of good games on there. The Gottlieb pinball collection is disappointing though, with only 7 tables; there are more on the PSP collection.
