... I think 'chip' music is terrible. However, I have to admit these are pretty good:

As far as Beck and chiptunes are concerned, I think Bad Cartridge rocks.

I just discovered Producer Snafu, who is a talented chiptune artist Kotaku turned me onto. This track, So Bad, really stands out:

If that's the best you heard, then no wonder you think chip music is terrible. If you want something truly awesome then check out The Depreciation Guild.

This is pretty good, again, nothing I'm going to listen to at home or driving around, but at least it has a good beat and is interesting

This, not so much. I really didn't hear where the 8 bit came into play, although I only made it through about 1.5 min. Aside from that, the music really isn't for me.

This topic really could use a more descriptive title than "Okay, personally..."

Anyway, I think chiptunes are great. Ruling out chiptunes in general would rule out a large amount of classic game music. The chiptune fan scene these days is really cool too. I've seen several awesome shows with chiptune artists.

Since we're throwing out recommendations, here's a chiptune rendition (under authentic Genesis limitations) of a Frost* song that my fiance and his buddy did:

They are not pure chip and I am not sure which song you listened to, but I am going to assume that it was Dream About Me since the Famicom is less obvious in the beginning of the song.

Also, if you don't like shoegaze, then you have no soul. ;)

I think it's cool that people still use these 'instruments', but far too much of it screams 'omg look at me I'm using a gameboy to make music, I'm so retro kewl!'

There's some of that, but for the most part chiptunes are way too sweaty and nerdy to be very hipster-ish, haha.

I've been making my own chiptunes since 2010. I started with FamiTracker but quickly shifted to making 16-bit songs in TFM Music Maker and MilkyTracker instead regularly, as I never actually grew up with a 3rd gen console and I prefer the broader variety of synths/samples. And the bass... man that YM2612 bass.

I even attempted 16-bit dubstep using TFM Music Maker once or twice... not sure whether or not that was such a good idea. There are a lot of talented chiptune composers on YouTube if you know where to look. Sometimes it's neat to hear covers of songs in 16-bit. Anamanaguchi (http://anamanaguchi.com/) is pretty good as well. The only chiptunes I dislike are the ones that are lazily ported through GXSCC or whatever, which isn't even 8-bit.

I have to admit, I still like listening to Amiga MOD music.

I have to agree with you Flam. Now, I do like some chiptune music blended in with other music (like the Beck songs you posted) but pure chiptune music drives me up the wall. That said, I really do appreciate the art of chiptune music and I think anything that keeps the 8-bit generation alive needs to be applauded.

It's all about finding the kind of music you like.

There's a lot of crap out there. Don't dismiss an entire genre because a lot of the music sucks.
