Why is there a pretzel among the fruit in Ms. Pacman?

It's a globally recognizable snack food shape with an unmistakable image. I don't believe there's a special meaning behind it.

The real question is why don't more games have pretzels in them? Imagine instead of just finding a suit in SMB3 Mario ate a pretzel to become a tanooki! How rad would that be?

Because they were starting to run out of ideas. To quote Toru Iwatani in an interview (http://www.glitterberri.com/developer-interviews/the-development-of-pacman/) on the making of the original Pac-Man:


"The initial concept for the fruit sprung from the notion that the drawings on slot machines found in casinos were American and cool. Because Pac-Man was a game about eating, we started by adding cherries, strawberries, oranges, and other fruit. Once we began running out of ideas, we even put in things like Galaxians. [Laughs] The idea of making a turnaround by eating a power pellet was influenced by the American cartoon show Popeye."

I was at a PAX East panel this year and the dudes who made Ms. Pac-Man were there and someone asked this exact question. The reason is because one of the dudes who worked with them really liked pretzels and they needed new items so they just put a pretzel in for the dude.
