Hey guys....
I tried google but only found people asking about leaving games in while off. I figure leaving the disk in while off is no biggie but I do watch alot of netflix.
I notice while a disc is in that little blue light is on however I can't tell if the disc is spinning. Could this hurt the ps3 or disk? Wear out the motor?
This may sound like a paranoid/stupid question but I don't want to ruin anything. My ps3 is second hand and it's my first new console in almost a decade so I'm a little unsure about proper care.
Thank you guys as always!

Unless you're playing the game it shouldn't be running at all. Meaning that I think you'll be fine. The blue light just indicates a disc is in the drive that's all.

Just to add to the topic, it's never a good idea to leave a game running unattended in the ps3, especially if it's on a title screen or a repeating cinematic, this will burn up a ps3 quick, it doesn't have the same low power mode while unattended like the xbox 360 does.
I burned up my ps3 while being away from it while Sonic the Hedgehog was at the title screen repeating the cinematic over and over, I came back and the ps3 was smoking hot, crappy game to lose a ps3 to also, lol.
I know that wasn't the question, but it was already answered so... :p

Good advice! I've been guilty of that before.

If you do ever YLOD your PS3 there's NO way to get the system to spit the disc out. That's a good reason to get your games out when you're done playing with them.

Yeah you might wanna take the disc out if you're watching movies, the machine can get pretty toasty after a bit.

So your saying the disk IS still spinning when watching Netflix?

I assume he is meaning from the YLOD angle in that you can't get the game out if it goes. I would think the chance of that happening while using netflix alone would be minimal though. Keep it in a well ventilated are (which you should be doing anyways) and I still don't think you have a cause for concern.
Besides all of that, is this an original phat model or a slim?

The light just tells you that a disc is inside, the drive itself goes into standby mode if not actively reading (the electronics are running but the motor and laser are inactive)

I do this a lot. I'll be about to go do something else, but I'll turn a game on thinking I might be quick, and then happen to do something else.
What I've since done is go to the PS3 power save settings and set it to automatically turn off after an hour if not being used. At first I didn't know how this would work, but it works fine. While on a video game, if there's no button input, it'll turn off in an hour no matter what is displayed on screen. However, on a movie or Netflix, it won't turn off until the movie or show is done playing and then an hour of no input.
On Netflix I usually fall asleep to tv shows, and the version on the PS3 now, it plays up to three shows. After the episode ends, it's like "starting next episode in 15 seconds." After the third episode, it asks if you're still watching the episode. If there's no response it goes back to the television show menu, then that's when the hour starts. My television doesn't have any option to turn off when not in use though, so it stays on the rest of the night.

I don't know about your TV, but some (mine included) can be set to turn off (or on) whenever the PS3 turns off (or on), so long as you're connected over HDMI. The turn on thing is pretty convenient, it automatically changes to the PS3's input and everything, but since I usually will watch some TV after I'm done with the PS3, I just disabled the turn off part (it was in the TV settings.)
The manuals and such will claim this sort of HDMI control only works with Sony TV's but that's a load of crap, it's just fine with a Samsung.
Like I said, no idea what kinda TV you have or how it's hooked up, so this might not apply to you at all, but just worth pointing out in case it's a feature you've missed.

I see warnngs all the time that my PS3 is about to shut down while I'm watching movies. There must be another setting that I'm not tagging, because it will automatically turn off after an hour of no key inputs, wether I'm watching something on it or not.

I had no idea the system could be programmed to do that and am going to do the same next time I have the system on.
