This guy is incredible. As a ritualistic player of Super Mario Bros., this guy is akin to the high priest of my faith. I thought some of ya'll might enjoy watching his speed runs on Youtube.

Wait, what's that warp trick on 4-2?! I've never seen that exploit/glitch/whatever before @_@

Wait, what's that warp trick on 4-2?! I've never seen that exploit/glitch/whatever before @_@This has come up before. You'll notice he manages to scroll the screen further to the right than normal. The same trick is used in 8-4; it's why he unexpectedly scrolls a little bit forward at 4:44.
The whole story and then some is at http://tasvideos.org/GameResources/NES/SuperMarioBros.html .

You need to be careful trusting some of these videos, there was one for SMB3 circulating around a few years ago from an asian guy, which was admittedly edited for fluidity, pieced together carefully to appear as a perfect speed run.

I'm almost certain these are tool-assisted (TAS) runs. Timer lag seems to be a sure sign of a TAS video, and on the SMB3 one, watch how long the timer sits at 290.
TAS videos are cool, very neat to watch, and take some effort to create, but should be considered art rather than player skill.

These are legit videos, some of which are hosted on speeddemosarchive.com AndrewG is a respected member of the speedrunning community and specializes in Mario runs. If you go to the site and read his notes you'll see how he achieved these runs. Skill, research and an unbelievable amount of hours went into the making of his Mario runs. He's currently working on beating the WR for Mario 2 (US). The forum topic for it on the site has some sample videos of tricks and shortcuts he's working on. Impressive stuff, way better than anything I could dream of doing!

Hmmm... you're right about the timer lag. Perhaps (more than likely) that one is a TAS run as I can't see any other explanation for the time freezing, but AndrewG holds a Twin Galaxy record for Super Mario Bros. so I trust the other video I posted is not a TAS. Hell. The fellow played a live (and very flawed) speed run in front of Miyamoto-san himself:

Hey! I received a comment from AndrewG on YouTube answering my question of if the Super Mario Bros. 3 video I posted here was tool-assisted or not, and he wrote the following:
Random, but I happened to stumble upon a post from you on another site [DP]. I just want to clarify that if you run full speed (and fill the "P-meter" completely), the timer appears to freeze. It actually does move, but extremely slowly. I always wondered whether the programmers did this as to give gamers an extra chance to finish when they are about to run out of time.
I just tested the timer/P-meter effect and confirmed that he is absolutely correct: the timer does indeed sloooooow down when you are running at full speed. A very cool feature I never knew of until now. Test it for yourself.

Fascinating! I definitely need to try this for myself.

I'm playing through NES SMB3 and yes! The timer definitely crawls when you start P-ing. Next time I'm bored I might try this in the SMAS version to see if they kept it in.

In the SMB1 video It looks as if he only tripped up once during the whole video. It is possible for him to beat his own record by at least one second. It happens in World 8-3 when he his almost to the flagpole. Watch carfully and you'll see what I mean when he bumps into a brick that just slightly slows him down. Still for a human player to achieve this, it is probably the closest one could get to matching the speed of a TAS.

I called it out as a TAS due to the timer lag which someone else here kindly corrected me on.
And in my defense...95% of these "OMG SUPER HUMAN PLAYER" videos are TAS videos. These happen to be a couple of the legit ones.
