A fan-made mod appears to have fixed Dark Souls: Prepare to Die's resolution issues, dramatically improving the game's graphics in the process. What's more, the modder was able to complete the fix within 23 minutes of the game's release.

There had been concern leading up to the PC version of Dark Souls (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dark-souls), with From Software acknowledging that Prepare to Die would likely release without expected optimization. Producer Daisuke Uchi had told Digital Spy (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/interviews/a398443/dark-souls-prepare-to-die-interview-namco-on-its-challenging-pc-port.html) earlier this month that the original game's frame-rate issues would not be fully fixed, while Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-08-09-dark-souls-pc-preview-the-devils-bargain) raised alarms over Prepare to Die appearing to be locked at 1024x768 resolution.

With all that in mind, NeoGAF user Durante spent the week before the game's release preparing a 'dll framework' to fix the problem. When the game launched earlier today, he only needed 23 minutes to finalize the code required to render it at a higher resolution. What's most surprising is how much better Prepare to Die now looks, with Durante's mod (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=488240) seemingly curing the unmodded version of its blurriness. The before (http://www.abload.de/img/data2012-08-2401-28-0xepj9.png) and after (http://www.abload.de/img/data2012-08-2401-24-0c4qnh.png) screenshots are striking.

While fans are delighted with the fix, the speed of one modder's work to improve Prepare to Die's resolution so dramatically forces questions to be raised. We've approached Namco Bandai for comment but the publisher declined to say anything at this time.

Japanese developers shouldn't even be allowed to make PC games. They just don't get it.

Thats pretty much it. I remember trying the FF14 mmo trial out for about a hour one day, and my god can Square not design a PC game if their life depended on it. The main problem is simply the controls, everything is hard coded and you could not change them. They made the game with a console in mind and stubbornly would not change it for PC. Its no wonder the game is still Free 2 play since nobody will ever pay for it as is.

I am glad they ported one of my favorite games to my preferred platform. The fix was coming and everyone assumed it would be later and not sooner.

Japanese developers don't make PC games. And that's the problem. The market for big-company games is just near non-existent over there. Sure you've got your doujin / indie creators and your adult games, and a few devs like Nihon Falcom who still support the PC. But the PC market over there just doesn't exist.

I was about to mention that the doujin scene is big over there, but yeah, it is a problem.

Is it lack of games Japanese people want on PCs that prevent them from having a vibrant PC gaming scene, or what?

They just love consoles too much, huh?

My 93 page book from 1983 of nothing but 8-bit computer porno says otherwise.

I really wish more Japanese games would get a pc release. I only buy consoles anymore solely to play Japanese games.

I do agree that they really flubbed this port of dark souls, though. But American-made pc games have similar problems. I'm still pretty miffed that la noire for the pc is locked in at 30 fps. And that's a aaa release!?!

The pc is capable of so much more with the right hardware. I really wish developers would take advantage of that for something other than an fps.
