What are some things you find yourself doing in video games to amuse yourself, but serve no real purpose?

- I find myself jumping a lot, especially through long hallways, and if I can I spin and do 360s and stuff
- In racing games I either like to drift over the finish line or stop at the finish line to rub it in (only if im winning)
- I try to kill everyone (even teammates and innocents if it doesnt affect my score)
- In modern games online if I see a teammate camping, I like to harass them, like throwing flash granades at them so they cant see

I'm sure I'll think of more

I like to blow up any loose grenades in Halo. I wish that mechanic had been kept in for the multiplayer.

Collecting items that I can't hold any more of. Like if I kill some enemies in Zelda games and they spew out hearts and rupies, I go collect them even though I'm full on both accounts.

LOL I do the same thing with health and energy in Mega Man games... even though I'm full I always try to pick them up

I like looking for interesting easter eggs ever since i learned the flute trick in SMB3.... it made me go "what else can i find games that you don't notice at first."
Thats why I love games like Open world games. People sometimes blast through games just to say they beat them but don't stop to see the cooky and crazy things game designers/developers put in to make ya stop and go "wow thats interesting"

In RPG's I must talk to every NPC, often multiple times to see if they've started saying anything new.

Remove and reapply tape to Harley Quinn's face in Batman: Arkham City. It's just so fun.

Ini strategy games (like advance wars) I like to take control of all cities/bases etc. before finishing the battle - unless there is a time limit. (I am not so concerned with getting high scores in the games.)

Games are played just to entertain yourself, and going by that anything in a game that entertains you serves it's purpose.

actually speaking of easter eggs.. Something I did with GTA SA on another forum i use to be on (which i got the PC version) was goto a certain area.... take a picture of a strange place (like say the giant leaf blower vibrator thing in the sex shop) and then be like ok i want you to go find that..... like a scavenger hunt. Made it feel like a game in a game :D

In games with auto-mapping, I have an OCD need to map EVERY single inch of whatever location I'm at. Seriously, I leave NOTHING uncovered.

I do this, especially in Japanese import games. I would hate to have to start over from the beginning of a level.

As far as I know you can do this in multiplayer. I've done it before and Official Xbox Magazine even did a blurb about it in one of their Halo articles for secret/unknown tricks.

For me I like to go to every corner of every room in order to completely fill out the unshaded map areas on HUD maps. Some of the games I've done this in are the 2-D Castlevania games(SOTN and the GBA ones) and Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic series.

Playing Trials HD and finding fun ways to jump off of my bike. Also Minecraft.

And in Mario Kart 64 on Royal Raceway I used to drive around the castle.

This is so sad, but here goes! Ok In Adventure for the 2600, I would move all the dead dragons in a castle via the bat, lock them all in. Then go through the kingdom and take all objects into the Warren Robinnett secret room and stash them there. Pretty boring after that but hey, it's cuz I could... LOL

-Collecting coins in Mario games even though I don't care about the score

-Mind-controlling and herding enemies in X-Com: UFO Defense (it's much safer just to kill them, but I like to round up a big pile of em and then have one of their own prime and drop a grenade)

-Leaving trails of single meseta as I run around in Phantasy Star Online. I used to do this online until I found out all those items can cause server lag that lead people to get black screens. Then again, everything in PSO caused black screens.

-Playing Battle Arena Toshinden with the intention of having the bonehead AI ring-out themselves repeatedly (especially Duke)

Like a couple others, I also clear entire maps to reveal all the terrain. Back when I was playing guild wars I even got the title (achievement) for it, which was a real pita in that game.

In the original Super Mario Kart in the Ghost Valley 1 course I like to hit the finish line diagonally so as to fall off the edge after the final lap.

When I use to play GoldenEye and Perfect Dark on the N64 I use to repeatedly shoot the corpses of my fallen adversaries, human or ai.

As a kid on the NES version of Bionic Commando, I use to make liberal use of the lack of a time limit and swing around the stage like it was a jungle gym.

Recently, through the use of emulation, I have been moonwalking through Super Mario Bros. because it pleases me to do such.

In the first halo I would pull out the needler and hit dead enemies while I flash my flashlight till the game slows down :)

In the old Genesis Madden games, I used to love dishing out late hits after the play was over. Especially if my opponent just made a big play on me, it was very satisfying. In Madden 96 it was possible to injure players this way. Whoever I was playing against would get frustrated and start running away from me, turning it into a cat and mouse minigame, after the play was over.

I know it was removed for realism purposes but I miss being able to late-hit someone in a Madden game.

I got a habit of mashing buttons during RPG battles as if it would make my attacks stronger or quicken my waiting time. I do that the most in Final Fantasy 13. I swear at times I think I'm going to whereout my button.

I had a friend who would be so entertained just shooting the water in duke nukem. He once sat there and shoot water for 15 mins laughing.

Didn't this result in a penalty usually? Unnecessary Roughness I believe it was.

I do this all the time too, though every once in a while I'll fuck up and handbrake turn over the finish line when there's still 1 lap to go and end up just looking like a moron.

I do these also.

-Collect almost every candle like object in platformers that have them. Ninja Gaiden series, Castlevania series, etc. I don't get every item because sometimes it's something I might not, but I'll hit every single one of them that's not way out of the way.
-In Resident Evil Outbreak 1 and 2, it records all stats with each character and displays if you've made it through a stage without getting hit and without using weapons. I'm always compelled to get both of those with every character in every stage. I just see no damage clear and no weapon clear greyed out and annoys me. Because it gives a score as well, I've even attempted to get both in the same stage on the very same run, so no weapons and no damage. It's possible on every stage, but you have to horde the weapons and give them to your allies at the end of some so they can kill the bosses. It's easier when there was online.
-Every time I play Final Fantasy 6, and the only RPG I ever do this with, I'll collect all characters as early as possible and level each character up one at a time with the best stat modifiers, but when my level is almost maxed out, I'll equip MP+50% to the stat modifier then HP+50% to cap everyone's HP/MP at 9999/999. Every single character. Umaro and Gogo are the only two that I'll wait until the end of the game to get since they can't equip espers. I also do this in World of Ruin at the Tyrano forest. I start with Relm with the EXP Egg and Fake Mustache, then once her level is high enough, swap out Fake Mustache with Offering, then once she's at level 99, use her to help the other characters level up until they can kill the Tyranos by themselves.

Other's mentioned that I also do.

-Remove and reapply tape to Harley Quinn's face in Batman: Arkham City. I've did this atleast a dozen or more times to hear everything she's said.
-In games with auto-mapping, I try to fill everything. Every exploration Castlevania is at 100% or higher, but there are some games where I try but it's way too time consuming. The map in Sacred 2 is huge. I still haven't got the trophy for master cartographer.

I definitely do a lot of these types of things when I play video games. I'll have to try and think of some of the funnier ones. I've been playing gta iv lately, so one that springs to mind is if I steal a car with a passenger still inside, I'll take him on the ride of his life. It usually results in high speed shootouts with cops until I bail out right before it explodes, or ramping into water. I'm not sure why this is so amusing. Open world games are endlessly fun.

in rpg's i'll usually change the main female love interests name to something like pussy, or "that bitch" and i just wait around all game long until finally all the pieces fall together and you get one of the most insane pieces of dialogue where everything just works, example, final fantasy 9, zidane talking to vivi on disc 2 i think "if you do this, i'll hook you up with pussy" lmao, or when that person inevitably gets kidnapped "help! we need to get her back, king whatshisname took that bitch!"

I think this came from the large number of hours I spent playing Goldeneye for N64- Sometimes I wouldn't be satisfied with just killing every enemy, so I would have to destroy every breakable object. Other times, if there were silenced weapons in a level, I would try to shoot out all the lights without being detected. I also found it fun to stay up on the second story part of the back of the gas canister room in the facility. For some reason, the enemies would just swarm the door, but never enter. You could slaughter them infinitely in many hilarious ways, and more would just keep coming.
