PS1 has a treasure trove of highly varied, and still very playable, games. Obviously, NES and SMS would also merit attention.

- NES is an obvious choice. I LOVE my NES and would recommend that.
- PS1 Great system with a lot of good and cheap games that are still fun to play
- N64 is hit or miss with a lot of people, I happen to love it
- Gamecube is a wild card... lot of great games and its not too expensive yet
Do you want cartridge-based or disc-based?

What types of games do you typically play?
I could easily reccomend a console that I really like, but its library of games may not suit your taste at all.

wiggyx is right. Knowing what types of games you like is one of the most important factors in choosing a system.
Are you also considering a current system (Wii or PS3?) That is another important detail to have.
For systems that are not in production anymore, the games available are set, whereas, current gen systems, they might be realesed or they might be delayed, cancelled, etc. Also, people have played through the games of older systems (some many times!) and therefore, can give a really informed opinion on those.

Sega Saturn by far is the most fun to collect for. There's something for everyone. The Japanese titles are absolutely stunning not to mention very affordable. So far my favorite to collect for.

Get a Dreamcast ASAP. There are a lot of fun titles and hidden gems in the system's library and it's a pretty affordable system to collect for.
I also recommend getting a Neo Geo Pocket Color (especially if you like fighting games - seriously, the NGPC has some of the best portable fighting games ever developed).

What types of games do you typically play?Yes, this! BUY THINGS YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO PLAY! Don't just accumulate stuff for the sake of accumulating!
In fact, if you've got tons of stuff sitting around that you haven't played yet, maybe you should take a look at that before you go spending more money. :bad-words:

Best library of games for the short time it was out.
It is a must have for any gamer.

Just beware of the 64 and it's awful joystick. If you are going to collect for one make sure you get some refurbished controllers or ones where the analog stick works. The 2600 however is compatible with the mega drive controllers.

what about ps1
Ps has a great library to explore. Can't really see a downside at all. Except I had read somewhere about the early models disc drive has all plastic components which can wear out.

I recommend getting a PSone with the official LCD screen. It's worth the splurge.

Additionally, it is important that the stick be re-lubed with silicone grease.

It's an excellent choice, especially considering you can get a $5-$15 import convertor and easily play Japanese games on it too.
