Hey guys, I just finally started playing Final Fantasy II (SNES) (IV for everything else) and wanted to know if there are any good strategy guides from that time period for it? I saw that Final Fantasy III has a Nintendo Power guide, but I can't seem to find anything for Final Fantasy II. Did it get a strategy guide or a good treatment in Nintendo Power? Am I out of luck for something for that time period?
If nothing is available, what is the best guide for one of the Final Fantasy IV remakes?
Cheers!

FF fansites. They offer detailed walkthroughs, maps, etc., and usually indicate the content that has since changed. I'm currently playing FFIV on the PSP and I like Caves of Narshe: http://www.cavesofnarshe.com/ff4/walkthrough.php That page includes all three versions of the game (SNES, GBA, PSP).
Mind you, more often than not, general FFIV walkthroughs use the SNES version.
The Final Fantasy Wikia site is a good source too: http://finalfantasy.wikia.com

IIRC the guide that was published in Nintendo Power was helpful - been a very long time since I played it however. (It may have spread out in more than one issue) - I think this was the one I used:

(Not pushing this listing - just plucked it randomly form ebay for the pic.)

That nP mag doesn't cover the whole game, just parts of it sort of like the old Traveler's Handbook's they tagged a few RPGs as where it walks you through a part of the game on the back end of the manual.
I don't tihnk a FF2 guide ever came out for the SNES in particular, but they did one up for the GBA re-release.

The manual had a strategy guide all the way to the Underground area, which kind of blunted the need for a strategy guide. If you can get to that point, the rest of the game isn't too hard to figure out, except maybe getting the damned hook for the airship.

What Evan said!
BTW, how are you liking it so far, Duck? I beat it about five years ago, and absolutely loved it! It was my first "real" RPG that I beat... not counting Mystic Quest. One of these days I plan to beat it again. Just a fun game...

Enjoying it so far; wanted the guide just because I'm OCD and a completionist. I want to be able to get everything on the first playthrough. I want to finish this so I can play Final Fantasy III SNES (I've been deliberately saving this experience for a while :-) )
I'm annoyed that you don't know anything about the specs for the weapons when you buy them, though I guess a guide will help this.
I have a copy of the manual; I guess between that and the Nintendo Power issue I should be covered! Thanks for the responses everyone!

And for me, the first real RPG I played was Final Fantasy VII, so I've been going back and playing the others (FF1, FF2 SNES and next is FF3 SNES. The ones not released here aren't as big of a priority for me now.)

Getting everything is pretty much impossible. There are a ton of awesome weapons, armour and items that are only dropped by enemies. The only problem is that most of these items get dropped only 1/64, 1/128 and 1/256 battles. You could go an entire playthrough without getting any of them.
I'm playing through the game with just the manual and originally included maps. The maps show every chest, so I don't think I am missing anything. I've played through the game quite a few times back in its time, but this is my first play-through in at least 15 years.
Never forget…

And let's not forget the infamous "You spoony bard!" line, which was the source behind The SpoonyOne's nickname.

1992-93 was the year of FFII for me. I have many notebooks filled to the brim with weapons/armor and enemy lists, comics I made about the game, and even 2 "novels" of the game's plot with pictures that I started but never finished.

There are a ton of secret items that do not come in treasure chests.

Yes, there's the GBA FF4 guide from Nintendo, and also one for Final Fantasy Chronicles (http://books.google.com/books/about/Final_Fantasy_Chronicles_Official_Strate.html?id=A D-C3_ow9UQC) on the PSX from Brady (half the guide covers FF4, half the guide covers Chrono Trigger).
The Nintendo one is better, IMO, but neither will match up entirely with FF2 SNES.

Really enjoying this so far. My favorite part so far:
Yang's Wife: Sure! A solider came, but I hit him with my frying pan!
That chick is baller. How do I get her to join my party instead of the ones that had to hide in the king's room during the fight???

Also, poor Yang and his wife have separate beds Brady Bunch style...
I found another photo from my recent play.
Tellah and another wizard peeping on women bathing in the water:
