I'm interested in learning more about this game, specifically the technology behind it. Most articles discussing this game tend to focus on the censorship that Nintendo forced on the developers but I've heard that story to death. Here's what I'd like to know - does anyone have these answers?
-Did the SNES version run on the same engine as the PC version? If not the same engine, was it the same tech?
-Were there any special chips included on the cart to assist with the effects (ala the FX chip in Doom)?
-Did the game utilize Mode 7 in any way?
-How did they manage the sprite scaling on the SNES and did any other games (aside from Super Noah's Ark) use similar technology?
While Wolf3d is certainly less advanced than Doom, it still seems kind of incredible that it was released on the SNES at all, given that the best the Genesis could manage in terms of FPS's at the time was probably Zero Tolerance which, while not a bad game, definitely is a pretty major step below SNES Wolf3d. Could Wolf3d have been done on a Genesis? I'd think if it was all in software the Genesis would have an advantage with its faster CPU.
So, are there any experts about this game out there? I'd also be interested in any articles, links, etc that might contain this type of info.

It could have been done on Genesis, with some sacrifices of course. The best example of that type of engine running on the Genny is probably Toy Story's first-person level (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksRULxaJhE0).
I'm not sure exactly how the SNES version works. It is smooth, but it's also very very pixelly. All the enemies look like mosaics.
The only other FPS I know of on SNES is Faceball 2000. It runs in a small window and isn't very impressive.

I seem to remember reading something about an SNES port of Zero Tolerance but I could be mistaken

Well, there's Super Noah's Ark 3D, but that's really just a clone of Wolfenstein.

Dunno, it was handled by Carmack though
No

I actually haven't even played Wolf 3D on SNES, I just happen to know that it had no special chip and used Mode 7 for higher colors. It is probably rendering at half or below half resolution and doubling it to achieve the effect.

From what I recall, SNES Jurassic Park also had some FPS segments...

It does, but they're not very impressive. They're choppy and run in a tiny window.

Wait, wasn't DOOM on SNES?

In the same way it was on the Genesis. ;)

I'm going to guess its some kind of unique work around due to hardware limitations?

Super FX 2 chipped game actually, with a super low resolution and framerate.
Here is a comparison video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5M7JpGlVDo).

I think "terrible" is the word you're looking for there. Jurassic Park sucked.
BTW, the 32X version of Doom is really good, much, much better than the SNES version. Best game on the 32X IMO, though with something like 35 total releases for that system that's not really saying much.

Duke Nukem 3D was released on the Genesis(Mega Drive) in Brazil, it's not as good as the PC version but I guess it's playable. Maybe Wolf3D could have worked on the Genesis then.

I'd also be interested in any articles, links, etc that might contain this type of info.http://hg101.kontek.net/wolfenstein/wolfenstein2.htm mentions that the whole engine was done in 3 weeks, and suggests that Masters of Doom (http://www.amazon.ca/Masters-Doom-Created-Transformed-Culture/dp/0375505245) may have more information.
