So I just got an incredible deal on a really rare game, Musha for the sega genesis for $4 only to bring it home and I can't get it to work. I tried cleaning it with alcohol and a q-tip then with an eraser, got ALOT of gunk out but it still won't work. I put the game in the genesis and the screen flashes and its just black. If I hit restart the produced by sega.. etc screen comes up but again just black. I have been going at it over and over but i'm limited because I can't get the cart open. I just ordered a security bit and it will be here sometime this week. What bothers me is the screws in the back look rusted and i'm hoping it wasn't damaged by water. If it was is this game unfixable? Are there any other cleaning methods that have worked for you guys on really dirty games?

Well I'm no expert (as my advice might show), but what I'd recommend next is to get some electrical circuit contact cleanser and use that as cleaning things like circuit boards and metal contacts is what it is designed for. Getting into the cart to clean it might not be required as what really matters is contact between the metal contacts in the game and the contacts in the console. However if the inside of the cart contains water or other conductive material which shouldn't be in there, it definitely needs to be removed. And if the contacts are rusted, all might not be lost if it isn't rusted completely through and you can use something like steel wool to remove the rust which is there.

Good luck!

You might want to open that cart up and take a look at the condition inside, you can also clean it better especially the pins at the the very sides which often get missed during usual q-tip cleaning.

Don't give up on it yet. If you can't get it to work once you open it up and clean it, post pics of it for us.

I would also suggest trying a different genesis.

Open the cart, scrub contacts with 000 steel wool. That's always been my absolute final step before calling it quits on a cart. Just make sure to clear away all of the debris when youre done.

Brasso is also a very good option.
