...And I realized what a fantastic game this is. Tremendous fun. 3 players.

I wasn't satisfied with the Genesis version, so, I fired up the original arcade.

I was wondering if the arcade rendition was ever released for XBLA or one of Sega's many retail releases of classic game packs?

Yeah, it's in the Sega Genesis Collection published for the PS2 and PSP back in 2006.

Sweet.

I'll look into the PS2 version.

I love that game. The pc engine version is really nice too. The only problem with it is that it tries to retain the larger and more detailed characters while sacrificing being able to see the whole playfield. It scrolls vertically as such, and baddies can pop up out of nowhere and kill you without much warning,

Still, I like the genesis version. It has awesome music, superior to the redbook audio on the pce version, IMO.

I'm sure all versions are fun, but the Genesis one is the only one I've tried!

Well, you should give the arcade version a try. Not only does it have better graphics, but you can also play with two other people for a total of 3-player action.

Haha, before seeing that arcade poster, I hadn't realized the premise behind Gain Ground. Human civilization has moved beyond warlike aggression, so some world government develops a computer simulation to revive our warlike tendencies? How noble! LOL

Fun game, though. I think I've played the SMS version most of all, it's rather good. A bit slower of a pace than other versions, maybe, but it retains the non-scrolling playfield.

I always thought it was just a basic walk along the ground overhead scrolling shooter. The multi character control is intriguing, have to explore this. On a side note, The PS2 Genesis Collection has a very unique unlock. The only near Arcade perfect on a home console version of TAC SCAN! The 2600 version just does not capture the vector graphics like the PS2 version.

No it isn't, the Genesis version is on that compilation. And I think the genesis game sucked, never played the arcade version.
