Bought a used DS game New Super Mario Bros and the game doesn't play. I get a fatal error has occurred please power down system and try repowering. No luck. Tried cleaning the contacts with contact cleaner with no luck. Has this happened to anyone else or have any suggestions on what to do? Thanks.

Could be a bootleg.

Doesn't look any different than my legit copy.

Here is something to try, push the cart in as in all the way in and don't let it go (you know how if you let it go the cart will become level with the case?) try turning it on now and see what happens.

My niece had a DS cart (card reader can't recall the brand) that had issue's in her DS, would work in one of my DS's but not another. It ended up being the contacts were too short and if the cart slot in the DS was the slightest bit worn it wouldn't make 100% contact. But if you pushed the cart all the way in, it would read.

Does that mean you couldn't lock the game in place to work? How am I supposed to play the game like that? But thanks, I'll give it a try.

Tried putting in all the way and turning on power, still didn't work. Also tried on a two other systems and it did the same thing.

I was going to suggest bootleg as well. That's a popular game, and as such would be the target of pirates.

Easiest way to tell is to look at the contacts. If there's a bunch of random numbers there, it's legit. If it says "NINTENDO", it's a bootleg.

Checked the back and above the contacts are letters and numbers on it. Is it legit? Plus I got a DS Lite and the game works fine in that but not my 3DS, any thoughts?

Post pics of your known legit copy along side this one and post please. Front and back. Let's make absolute sure it's not bootleg (which is what I seriously suspect).

Will try to post later, but it looks just like my legit copy.

Here are the pictures of the two carts. The one on the left is my legit cart bought new from Gamestop. It works in my 3DS and DS Lite with no problems. The one on the right is the used one that works in a DS Lite but not in anything else. Tried several different units, couple of 3DS's, couple of DSI's. Pics are the best my camera will do.

One on the right is a boot. Just look at the differences in manufacturing and printing tolerances. Artwork being cut off is the first thing to give it away, on the "NEW" part.

It's a bootleg, they tend to work on older hardware but not newer ones. It's probably still fine on original DS and DS Lite systems.

Yeah it works fine in my DS Lite but nothing else. Thanks to all for your help. If anyone's interested in it PM me!
