Sony kicked off the Tokyo Game Show today by announcing a new, even smaller version of the PlayStation 3. It's 25% smaller than the PS3 Slim and half the size of the original PS3. It will be available next week. The company also announced that the PlayStation Plus subscription service will finally be added to the PS Vita in November, providing automatic game updates and extra storage. "Sony also revealed that the long-awaited PlayStation Mobile service will launch via the PlayStation Store on October 3, with support from Sharp and Fujitsu who have both joined the PlayStation Certified license program."http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png (http://twitter.com/home?status=Sony+Announces+'Superslim'+PS3%3A+http %3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FS6OfEu)http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png (http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fsto ry%2F12%2F09%2F19%2F0559240%2Fsony-announces-superslim-ps3%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfaceboo k)http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png (http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://games.slashdot.org/story/12/09/19/0559240/sony-announces-superslim-ps3?utm_source=slashdot&utm_medium=googleplus)

Still too expensive. Can't wait to see Ben Heck molest one though.

Its a significant size decrease though the pricing is pretty funny.

The ridges look really cheap in all the real live shots, shame too since it looks great in every way outside of that. I'm assuming they did that because its a non motorized shield for the disc tray but a smooth surface with an indent/handle or a textured surface like the old Slim would of be much better then the ridges.

I think Sony should have kept it simple. New PS3, 250GB of space, same price of $250 or bundled with Uncharted 3 GotY for $269.

Instead, people will walk up, see 472 different PS3 SKUs, and might not even pick one up at all.

The only thing I like about the new model is the top loading disc tray. Although, if my current PS3 craps out on me, I'll probably give this model a shot.

Wow, that looks a lot nicer than earlier leaked pictures made it look.

Also, good to hear all those rumors about how limited the storage space was going to be didn't pan out.

Not entirely true. Europe is getting a 12gb SKU. No plans for a US release as far as I know however.

Meh, it looks better than the previous slim, but I can't believe they didn't drop the price! A stock entry level PS3 should be $199 by now, that's about the only thing I can see causing an uptick in sales.

In fairness, they will likely do another $200 holiday package again likely with an additional game or two, so if you can wait, you will probably be able to get one for that.

I'd imagine the old SKU's will go on sale too. Companies will want to clear shelf space for the new models.

I don't like it. It's an odd shape, which I actually DO like, but the disc mechanism looks cheap. It doesn't strike me as a flagship gaming platform, to be honest.

Change it to a PS2-style tray loader, and it would be awesome. Lower the price, and it might actually get some market share outside Japan.

With them changing it somewhat to the look of the older PS3 and the way discs are swapped out, I wonder if the makers of the PS3 grill can sue?

I'll been holding out on buying a PS3 for awhile hoping to get one for $200 or under. Redesign looks good however the price isn't what I had hoped. Guess I'll have to keep a close eye on those holiday deals, hopefully I can snag one for under 200 then.

Looks ok I guess. Still like my 120G Slim and works great.

That's smexy, I like it.

I've no need for one, got a normal slim that works fine, but the new one is pretty.

Is this their way of trying to slice into Wii U sales for the holidays?

At this point in the console cycle I don't see how this will make much of a difference. It's not likely to sell any better than the current model is doing, especially at that price.

The bill of parts is probably 10-20% less than the previous slim model. They also probably require less packaging material and weigh less meaning freight from Asia or other manufacturing hubs to distribution points will be cheaper. That can translate into an additional $10-$20 net profit on each unit sold rather than the relatively slight margin Sony currently makes on the previous PS3 slim. You sell a million of these this Christmas in bundles in each of the three major regional markets and that can really add up quickly.

That reminds me of that gimped PSP that only came out in Europe. Hey Sony, stop selling Europe junk, I'm sure they like real systems as much as the rest of us. :shameful:

looks like a cheap toy to me, the original model is still the best looking one. The lack of disc tray makes it the worst disc based console mechanism ever. If they wanted to make it cheaper to produce, they should have made a lid like sega consoles. This is the first time I see a fugly sony console.

I'd say it's a vast improvement over the wonky slot loading mechanism.
There are fewer things that could go wrong.
