New submitter DangerOnTheRanger writes "Torque3D, the game engine behind games such as Blockland and Tribes 2, has gone open-source. The engine itself — in addition to four game templates — are all included in a Git repository hosted on GitHub. Documentation is available in a separate repository. Quite the exciting time in the world of game development!"http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png (http://twitter.com/home?status=Torque3D+Engine+Goes+Open-Source%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FRGqAwu)http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png (http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fdevelopers.slashdot.org% 2Fstory%2F12%2F09%2F21%2F2117206%2Ftorque3d-engine-goes-open-source%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dface book)http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png (http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://developers.slashdot.org/story/12/09/21/2117206/torque3d-engine-goes-open-source?utm_source=slashdot&utm_medium=googleplus)

Why does the servebot always link to useless slashdot posts?

Why does the servebot always link to useless slashdot posts?

ServBot reposts from selected RSS feeds verbatim, and games.slashdot (http://rss.slashdot.org/Slashdot/slashdotGames) is one of them. If you click on that you'll see that Slashdot actually strips the links out of their posts in this format. The other one it pulls from is Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com/rss.xml), who are thankfully cool enough to leave the links intact on theirs, so ServBot passes them along as well.

And even if it had the hyperlinks, Slashdot always links to useless articles instead of the originals anyway. ;)

I did some work in this engine a few years ago. It's a solid engine that's not as robust as a lot of other big name ones, but it should be a great asset for indie developers. Marble Blast Ultra was made with this, and that was pretty great.

I've always wanted to mess around with my own FPS, something like Jumping Flash!, and this seems well suited to that.
