It seems that so many in the retrogaming community have an ax to grind with the Duck Hunt dog. Of course, it could just be that people are simply looking to make an easy and easy to relate to joke when they talk or write about longing to shoot the dog for all the times he laughed at them over the years. How do you feel about him?

In the arcade version, you can kill the dog.
Also, there is a flash based game where your objective is to kill the dog.

It always made me mad that Nintendo altered the game from the Playchoice 10 version to the NES. Shooting the dog at the arcades was classic. Nintendo's censoring of games was sickening.

The only time I really see the dog laugh is at game over screens where his laughter is muted, so he doesn't get my goat at all. When I went to the trouble of playing Double Duck Hunt with two television, two Nintendos, and two zappers I wish he would have cut me some slack, though.

Why would you want to shoot a dog? Thats what zombies, aliens, nazis and Osama Bin Laden are for.

Yet there were dogs in Wolfenstein 3D too, along with the Nazis and zombies.

If you pop in your SNES cartridge and look more closely, you will clearly see that they are rats and not dogs, Gameguy.

If the dog was a poodle, then yes, I would love to empty a magazine into said mutt. What an ugly, worthless breed.

As far as the Playchoice 10 goes, all their games are essentially NES roms on a different board modded for the arcade, and were 1:1 ports of the NES versions. The VS. version of Duck Hunt is the one you're thinking about.

I'm 100% positive that Gameguy is talking about the original DOS version, not the censored SNES port

I struggle to imagine anyone who uses Guybrush Threepwood as their avatar picture ever playing anything other than console games.

Is that what that avatar is? It looks feminine and I thought is was some 1920's picture of a woman.

Monkey Island is MAGIC. The Secret of Monkey Island gave me some of the best video game memories I have. I have yet to play through the remakes of 1 & 2, however, proving what a lousy Monkey Island fan I am.

Odd, I've never heard of anyone limiting their gaming to just consoles. Most gamers and collectors have at least one classic computer like the C64, Apple II, TRS-80,etc. Not to mention DOS/Windows/Mac PC's of the last 20 years. Some of the best games of all time were originally computer based. Monkey Island is a perfect example.

Yes there are dogs in Black Ops and many other games as well. But the difference is that all of those dogs either want to bite you or hump your leg to death. The Duck Hunt dog just wants to snicker and has no intentions of eating you alive....atleast not in any of the versions I've played.

I'd like to see the Duck Hunt dog hacked into Wolfenstein 3D just for fun.
Seeing all the replies just about my avatar is pretty neat, I didn't think it would ever be confusing to some people. The Secret of Monkey Island was one of the best games I've played through so I just made Guybrush my avatar. I haven't bothered with the most recent remake, only the previous CD-ROM version with the updated interface was as far as I'd go with a remake.

I love Guybrush Threepwood. He is one of my favorite takes on the "hero" that I have ever stumbled across.
I just played a bit (an hour or so) of the remake of Secret of Monkey Island demo on my iPod, and I must say that I strongly prefer the original's pixelated graphics over the redrawn graphics, although the addition of the voices is a worthy option to have on the table. Regardless, I need to play through the series again. I think it has been well over five years since I properly romped around Melee Island.

you should go with the ScummVM app on iPod/ Android if you're looking to get a closer version of the original DOS games on the go. I sat down with Loom this past weekend and polished it off in around 4 hours (Sorry, a bit slow with the puzzles.. my brain grapes were coming in slow).
