Virtual boy won't power on

I'm trying to get my virtual boy to power on. I have two virtual boys and only one came with a battery pack. When I opened the battery pack, I noticed what looks like black spots where the plus side of the battery goes. Could that be a problem with corrosion or battery acid from the previous owner leaving batteries in? Do you guys have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Is this a problem just with the battery pack, or will they not power on with the adapter as well?
