Isn't the copyright on the main screen 1988? That was before the Genesis came out in the US, meaning it was developed in Japan. So it seems odd that you're an American fighting Japanese troops. So maybe it was the other way around, a Japanese soldier fighting American troops, and it was planned to have a rewrite of the storyline for foreign release. Then maybe they thought it was too touchy a subject and decided to not release it. It's a little different than Capcom's games like 1942, where you play a Japanese Zero pilot fighting US aircraft. In Battle Mission, you get to see the enemy in person before you gun them down. It could be that it was just too controversial to put out. Like Propeller Arena for the Dreamcast after 9/11.

The copyright is 1990, not 1988.

No you're not, you're an American pilot flying a P-38 Lightning. That's always been the case, even in the original Japanese version and all of the sequels (except for 1943 Kai, where you're flying a biplane).

Which issues are these from? At the very least I can get some proper scans online.

I don't know about the VG&CE preview, but I know the other one is EGM Number 13, August 1990, on page 84 (I'm going by memory)
Sorry I don't have the magazine anymore so I cannot scan it but the cover looks like this:

Probably reworked and released as 'Bodycount' some years later.

Wow very interesting! The graphics look pretty good and it actually looks as though it would have a fun game! Any info on why it was cancelled?
