What video game system had the shortest lifespan. Wait, here are the qualifiers:
1. The system had to have been released in the U.S.
3. No Handhelds to be included.
2. By lifespan I'm talking about from the launch date to the final NEW RETAIL game being released.

With absolutely no research or thought applied to my answer, I'm guessing the Virtual Boy -- unless you'd consider that a handheld, which I wouldn't.
And we're only counting programmable game systems, I take it.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I was thinking the Virtual Boy or the 32X.
Although the Virtual Boy isn't really a home system, and the 32X is an add on that needs something else to function.

You'd call the VB, what, a "standalone" system, like the Vectrex.
I do give Nintendo much credit for burying the VB so swiftly and efficiently. It was the most successful failure in videogame history.

Right. The N64 had a lifespan that lasted about 6 years. *cough* That isn't short at all by video game standards.

Ok, I need to re-phrase the question.
Which of these systems had the shortest lifespan:
a. Atari 2600
b. Intellivision
c. ColecoVision
d. Atari 7800
e. NES
f. Sega Master System
g. TurboGrafx-16
h. Sega Genesis
i. Super Nintendo
j. Atari Jaguar
k. Sega Saturn
l. 3DO
m. Sony Playstation
n. N64
o. Dreamcast
Just limit it to these systems. Forget the CD-I, the 32X, and any of the other pre-NES systems. Which one of the above puppies had the shortest period of time starting with the launch of the machine, to the final game being released at a Retail store.
My guess is going to be d.) Atari 7800

Wrong. The 7800 was supported 1986-1990. 4 years is longer then I believe you saw support for 3d0 or jaguar, or even the dreamcast.

Hmmm, Without better knowledge, I'm thinking that the Jag might top the list, however I wonder how far the TG truly went. DC had somewhere past 3 but not after 4, 3d0 didn't last too long if memory serves... it's somewhere in those four

Someone more knowledgeable about this topic should do a chart or a timeline about this. It would be interesting to see.

of that last list, probably 3DO, Jaguar, or Dreamcast.
There were so many games for Dreamcast for what seemed like such a short period of time.

Definitly Dreamcast for sure.

But do you apply a cut off for regions? The Dreamcast is still being supported in Japan.

DC barely made it two and a half years in the US:
First game: 9/9/99
Last game: NHL2k2 - early 2002
