I thought this was really funny.
EDIT: Now THIS is just ridiculous: http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-57324457-1/peta-goes-after-mario-and-his-tanooki-suit/

The mario story is old and we knew about it so yea. They also got aini game tied to it too.
The pokemon thing though is fucked up.
Sometimes i wonder if they make some of this crap to try and keep themselves in the media. Because they cant be that bat shit crazy... Can they?!

It's how they get attention. It's obviously a non-issue, but they know people will get all worked up about it and that'll start discussion, which is all they're looking to get from this; their name spread around like butter.

They are 14 years late to the party on this issue. Were they under a rock and now they finally come out from hiding?

Can't PETA get sued by Gamefreak for copyright infringement?

PETA knows that it's usually nonsense, BUT it gets people who otherwise wouldn't be, talking, and thinking about the real issues. PETA's M.O. is to 'take one for the team'. It's what a lot of people don't seem to realize about the organization. Once you understand that you may (again 'may') have more of an appreciation for what they do, and the awareness that they drum up.
Like the old Mario Tanooki suit thing they were raving about. Before that, a lot of people never even knew what a Tanooki was. That such a creature even existed, or that there was a raccoon dog fur trade at all. That's the sort of thing they try to accomplish with their shock and awe campaigns.

Theoretically, yes, but since it can easily be argued as a parody, it's not really worth pursuing IMHO.

LOL PETA
They're just getting attention. I'm pretty sure that no matter how fringe they are, they realize that a 40ft long snake made of granite that can be digitized inside a ball and carried in one's pocket is not "an animal".
They're just trolling us, and doing a pretty good job of it. I feel like everyone who works there must spend a lot of time on 4chan. I kind of admire them just because they manage to get everyone so pissed off at their outrageous bullshit all the time.
