I didn't see a thread on this so redirect me if there already is one :)
Shmups (or shoot em ups) are some of my favorite types of games ad co-op is one of my favorite type of game, so you can imagine how much I love the two together. So what are some good coop shmups you know of? Preferably pre-PS2 games would be the most appreciated. Arcade games are also encouraged.

Life Force (NES) is of course a must have for shmup co'op action.
Crisis Force (Famicom) is amazing and it is a damn shame that the cart goes for so much.
The Parodius series on the Famicom and Super Famicom are pretty awesome.
Evidently, apart from Konami, I know of no co'op shmups.

Darius Gaiden on Saturn (Ive only really played the Japanese version) is one of the best shumps in my opinion. Its really good and its two player. If you are playing it alone you can use the 2nd player's continues when you use up all the 1st players stock.

Pretty much all of the TwinBee games are co-op, and you can even do special co-op attacks. You can even have three players in some.

The entire Raiden series is gold. I'd highly recommend those.

There's S.C.A.T for the NES. Air Buster and Forgotten Worlds for Genesis. Darius Twin for SNES. I think the arcade version of Raystorm is 2-player.

Ever try Dragon Saber ? It is the follow up to dragon spirit and it supports co-op.Few others i can recommend are these.

I don't know if this is out in the States or not, but Dariusburst: Another Chronicle EX is a recent arcade shmup by Taito that lets you play with up to 4 players simultaneously. Not post-PS2, but I enjoy playing this with my friends. If you see it, it might be worth a game.

And that's even kind of a shoddy port, though by no means terrible (it's the same guys that did crummy NES ports of 1942, Athena, Son Son, Ghosts 'n Goblins, etc). The Genesis version is better, but one player only. If you can find a copy of Raiden Project for PS1, you won't be disappointed.

Seems like Saturn has some good ones. I was thinking about getting a saturn anyways. Can anyone tell me about Shmups on the Saturn? they don't have to be 2 player but that would be good sticking with the thread.

What do you want to know ? Most shoot'em ups on the saturn are ports of arcade titles.Prices do very on it some are expensive while others are cheap.Other then that playing imports on it are simple either region mod it or use a pro action replay.Also i can recommend a few more on the console.

Id say it is if you're really into shmups i know i have plenty of them for it.Not to mention does have good first party titles,2D fighters,puzzle games and other genres etc.
PS1- Geki-oh Shooting King by Natsume has lots of fun gameplay modes, should be really cheap, got mine yrs ago for $4
