itwbennett writes "Earlier this week, Foxconn revealed that an internal investigation had turned up workers as young as 14 toiling at its factory in Yantai, China. Now Nintendo, whose products are manufactured at that factory, is also investigating Foxconn's labor sourcing." http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png (http://twitter.com/home?status=Nintendo+Investigating+Underage+Worker s+At+Foxconn%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FQznnJs) http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png (http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fsto ry%2F12%2F10%2F19%2F0230202%2Fnintendo-investigating-underage-workers-at-foxconn%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfac ebook) http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png (http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://games.slashdot.org/story/12/10/19/0230202/nintendo-investigating-underage-workers-at-foxconn?utm_source=slashdot&utm_medium=googleplus)

Wow, they're really on top of this.
Foxconn has already outed themselves on this one, so what's the point of Nintendo getting involved, aside from keeping up appearances and giving themselves a pat on the back?

Perhaps they want to be overly-preventive (as in avoiding possible lawsuit). Besides, doesn't matter what ppl talk about, as long as they talk about you.

It's the same reason Apple has done all sorts of PR type things about their own Foxconn issues. If they ignore the news, it could come back to bite them hard. At least this way it gives the appearance that they care and are trying to be proactive.

A corporation can actually face a shareholders suit if they engage in conduct that is illegal and that has an impact on share value or earnings. There are also criminal charges and civil suits they could face from governmental organizations that enforce treaties that involve the improper exploitation of labor. It doesn't happen all that often, but it certainly can.

Nintendo actually has very strong wording about child labour laws and policies in their manufacturing and partner agreements, with penalties.

If a Nintendo partner was using them for anything or Nintendo themselves... that'll be litigation.
