SternisheFan points out an article at Wired arguing that game consoles and the business model that sustained them are now "obsolete." Quoting: "Years from now, 225 million devices will almost certainly be seen as the point at which the console business peaked. Gamers are going elsewhere for their fix. The console’s time at the top of the heap is drawing to an end, and these machines won’t survive without radical change. ... Consoles used to do everything best, but those strengths are now being wiped away. Unlike PC games, which may require finicky custom settings, consoles 'just work,' fans have long pointed out. Well, so does the iPad. Consoles are cheaper than PCs? Not when you factor in the growing disparity in game prices. Consoles have all the good content? Well, if you want Nintendo- or Sony-exclusive games, you’ll need to buy their hardware. But for many gamers, Angry Birds is becoming more attractive than Mario. http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png (http://twitter.com/home?status=Wired+Proclaims+the+Death+of+the+Game+ Console%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FWQwi0l) http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png (http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fsto ry%2F12%2F10%2F27%2F1321205%2Fwired-proclaims-the-death-of-the-game-console%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfac ebook) http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png (http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://games.slashdot.org/story/12/10/27/1321205/wired-proclaims-the-death-of-the-game-console?utm_source=slashdot&utm_medium=googleplus)

Not a bad article. Though I don't agree with parts of it, it does raise some valid concerns, such as the rising cost of AAA game development with diminishing returns.

Are we finally ready to kill the ServBot?

I'm more in favor of just changing up where it gets it's stories. The Slashdot ones tend to be the same shit over and over again and the Kotaku ones tend to be two week old crap.

Next thing you know they'll be proclaiming the imminent death of PC's.

They've been doing that for years. It's been more irritating since tablets have become prolific. I'm even hearing it about laptops, not just desktops anymore. Just like that, claiming that consoles are dead it is idiotic.

Publishers try to get more people to buy their magazine by including controversial headlines and articles. It's just a marketing tactic. You can't take it seriously.

Advertising has decreased in magazines the past several years, which means we get more controversial fluff pieces to fill in the pages. Don't fall for it.

I saw Slashdot, then I saw Wired. Not taken too seriously.

It's all different strokes for different folks. To say one device is going to eat the lunch of the consoles to the point of their starvation is just dumb. People game on everything-phone on the go then when they get home they can hop on their console or PC for something with more substance.

Why do these authors think it's an "either/or" market?

How soon until Wired proclaims the death of Wired magazine?

I'll take a console any day. And will keep playing them till I die!

I have maybe 2 games on my iphone, with Angry Birds being one of them. Angry Birds is alright, but it's not exactly the greatest game ever.

Most of these smart phone games are gimmicky crap or very short on gameplay. They'll never replace a full-fledged console.

Consoles died midway through the current gen.
All we have now are set top boxes.

I think that the format in which consoles distribute games is nearing an end, not consoles themselves. There will always be demand for playing games on the home TV set. I agree that consoles have turned into set top boxes.
