So the Wii U is coming out and I was thinking of buying it, when I tried to tell my friend this, this is what happened:

Me: So, Im thinking of buying an Nintendo Wii..

Friend: OH MY ........ GOD! I HATE THE WII WHY WOULD YOU GET THAT?!?!?!?!

Me: Not a Wii, a Wii U.

Friend: The Wii is stupid, I hate that freakin thing and its weird ass controller.

So then I realized I hated the Wii too, so why am I calling this system which looks a lot better and more of my taste game wise a Wii U? Thats a stupid name. It has a U in it, what does that stand for? Ultra???

Well, this is what I propose, everyone who hates the Wii just call this system instead the Ultra Nintendo. Its hardware is superior to the SNES. So whats better than Super? Ultra, thats what!

What do you guys think?

I'm pretty sure they call it the Wii U because the Wii was such a successful system, and they want to bring those same casual fans back for their new system. I don't have a problem with the name. That weird IPad-like controller on the other hand, doesn't seem like something I would be interested in.

Yeah I dont know why Nintendo is in this "two screens" thing. Someone on Kotaku was going crazy about all the "cool new" features it would open up to RPG's. I dont see any of those being different than playing with a normal controller and using your tv. It all comes down to tapping buttons and looking at a screen, so why divert my eyes away from the bigger screen in the room?

Nintendo says it is going to focus on real gamers who arent into Wii Sports and other casual games of that nature. So I have a problem with them keeping the Wii name then. They say theyll still release casual titles for the Wii, which makes their choice of name for this system even more questionable.

I came up with idea, it probably wont pick up that much, but its worth posting around. My mom was going to buy me a Wii, for what reason I really dont know, and she had no idea the Wii U was coming out. If we can come up with a way to distinguish the two away from each other I think itll save some headaches this coming Holidays.

I thought it was determined why Nintendo couldn't use the name "Ultra" over 15 years ago...

Your friend sounds like an idiot, and you're an idiot as well if you're spazzing out over the name of a console. Grow up.

I think calling it the wii u makes sense they can capitalize on the wii's huge success. This thing looks amazing I can't wait to get one but until I can get it for around $200 and have the cash to spare I won't/can't. Also keep in mind it already seems to be selling very strong just like the wii

I don't recall the reasons between the name change from Ultra 64 to Nintendo 64. Why was it again?

I wanted them to name it the "F U" but apparently that wouldn't go over so well with their kiddy image. But regardless of the moniker this system is going to sell like hot cocoa in Alaska when it arrives next month. Theres no telling how long the momentum will continue once the holidays are over but they should easily sell 1-2 million systems in the next two months alone so I don't think they are too worried about the name haters anymore.

Besides that it's stupid?
Probably the only thing they could've done to make the name more '90s would be to call it the Ultra X-TREME (yes, in all caps, maybe a few exclamation points too) 64.

(because we know the game industry is all about clever console names like GameCube and Xbox. :P )

I've made peace with the lackluster name ages ago, just as I did with the Wii's. My concern is the controller and the direction that it will take the games. The Wii had some great games (alright, Muramasa: The Demon Blade is the only one that comes to mind) that ignored the motion element of the Wiimotes, so perhaps everything will not be an all out explosion of poorly conceived and just functionally executed novelty.

Two screens to play a game makes no sense to me at all. I still cant get over that article ZI read on Otaku a guy wrote saying itll make RPG's better.

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm excited about it. Also, for any fans of the Alien franchise, do you remember the motion tracker attachment on the guns? I hope the new Aliens game from SEGA uses this with the gamepad controller. I've seen where Nintendo has patented an accessory that let's you attach the gamepad to a Wii Zapper.

Also saw these awesome third party pro controllers, I just hope they're better than all the other third party junk. I especially like the SNES and SFC ones.

Maybe just because you could have an always-open item/options menu without having to switch screens in the game? Of course that might give you less time to react if you're in an open field with things moving around and you're too busy looking at your items menu to know what hit you. Yeah, that's so much better (NOT).

Back when Nintendo 64 was Ultra 64, I really wanted them to rename it Ultra NES. For one it was following NES and Super NES, so it seemed fitting to keep the NES part (same as Sony always keeps Playstation and MS keeps Xbox), but also because to me at the time that 64 made me think not of 64 bit like they intended but 64k, as in the Commodore 64. But it's been ages since that even crossed my mind. I got over it.
