I was looking in the room of doom photos and someone has a flat tv turned vertically. I know its used for shooters like dodonpachi, but if you wanted a set up like this all the time, what system will take advantage of this the most? Who has the most games for this type of setup?

Here's a great intro that explains what it is, how to use it and why.

That is so cool. Can you play videogames on any computer monitor? What is a nice size rotateable monitor?

For me it's the Dreamcast. Ikaruga, Under Defeat, Gunbird 2... i won't play them any other way. But keep in mind that they're just arcade ports. A lot of arcade games use this setup (even pac-man). So i'd say mame/emulation would use vertical screen most often. I don't think there has ever been a console only game that has used TATE (they're all arcade games). The only thing i can think of is Gauntlet for the Lynx, but i don't think that counts.

I also have a dedicated tate setup, and it's almost exclusively for the Sega Saturn. So many great shooters on that system.

Not really related, but I know a lot of software developers like to have one monitor in a dual monitor desktop be vertical. It makes reading through long blocks of code easier. Most modern video cards let you easily set the orientation.
The only thing i can think of is Gauntlet for the Lynx, but i don't think that counts.
Klax and NFL Football for the Lynx are like that as well.

One day I was trying to run MESS on my PC hooked up to my 52" tv. And it automatically tried to show the game vertically. There is no way I can turn that huge TV on its side on my own and then back, so I tested out the video options for quite a while to try and make it display normal like the original Atari console would. I guess I just prefer the wide stretching I have gotten used to.

It's probably worth pointing out that rotating a CRT can potentially cause gausing issues.

I havbe heard of that especially happening with crt's that used magnets in their speakers but i also havbe lcd's for tating too:).

Certainly, if you simply flip your TV over in a snap, don't be surprised if everything turns green. The proper way to rotate a TV is to turn it on it's side slowly, and let it sit for a while before turning it on.

Playing a 3:4 game stretched to 9:16 proportions looks even stranger I think in light of that screenshot than stretching a game horizontally does...

I used to do this with one of my monitors, but nowadays, most shooters have a mode where you can have TATE mode video and rotate the control so you can still play with the TV in the normal position. None seem to have an option to rotate the HUD, though. ):
It basically just turns vertical shooters into horizontal ones, which is really disorienting if it's a game you're used to playing vertically, but fine for new or unfamiliar games.

I would say so since most of it's shooters support tate.
I wonder if it's safe to turn my Sony PVM-20M2U on it's side.... I've done it with my commodore 1084 monitor, but this new Sony monitor is so much heavier. I'd hate to damage it in any way...

I used to play Galactic Attack in TATE mode sometimes, but it was the only Saturn game I had that supported it, and I didn't like tipping my tv over all the time just for one game.

In reply to the original post, I find that Saturn, PS2, and Dreamcast have the best selections of vertical oriented games.
I don't think there has ever been a console only game that has used TATE (they're all arcade games). The only thing i can think of is Gauntlet for the Lynx, but i don't think that counts.
A number of Wonderswan games are vertical. iirc Rockman & Forte, and Wonderswan Makaimura, and Klonoa, all have tate platforming levels.

Japanese PS2 (or region free) has the most titles which support tate display. (especially when you count the PS1 games)

There's plenty of stuff that will TATE on xbox 360 (especially japanese version), PS2 (japan), Saturn, DC and PC.
Some of my various TATE setups. I also have some arcade cabinets in TATE orientation.

If you turn a color CRT monitor on its side while it's on, the colors will go all wonky. It's simply because you're rotating the monitor inside a magnetic field (the earth's), so the electron beams are not hitting where they're supposed to anymore, causing them to hit the wrong holes in the mask (black and white CRTs will not have this problem, because there's no mask, but the image will shift slightly). Most TVs, and certainly computer monitors, fire their degaussing coils when they start up, so if you turn it off then back on the problem should go away. Or, more sensibly, turn it off before rotating it!

So is TATE in the game, system, or TV? If your TV is vertical, will any shooter look like that?

It's the game itself.

Most does not equal best. I would agree that the Saturn is the best console for this.

Yeah for most consumer model TVs, you should:
1. Turn it off
2. Rotate it vertical
3. Leave it powered off for 5-15 minutes
4. Then power on
I used to this on a couple of TVs back in the late 90s for some Saturn shmups.
However what's nice about the RGB Sony PVM CRTs I have, I can rotate it on the fly while on.... hit the degauss button and voila no color bend. But generally I turn it off before rotating, then hit the degauss button when I immediately turn it back on after rotation.
Lots of people here say Saturn is the best library for a dedicated TATE setup, but I'd have to say these days it's more like the japanese 360 or japanese ps2. I've got every vert shmup for Saturn, 360, PS2 (and other platforms) and I'd say the Saturn was dethroned a while back.
.... and no it's not quantity over quality. There are lots of quality vert shmups on import ps2 and 360. However, what's the point? Just hook up multiple systems to it.... but you want to play horizontal games too without having to flip the TV every time? Get a powered splitter. You can get a powered video splitter for hdmi, component, composite/s-video. One output running to your horizontal setup and the other to your vert setup. That's how I do it in my computer room.
Here's a demo/test of my distributed video. Source is being fed to 3 flat panels and 1 CRT. I also have the video being fed through a dedicated video processor (DVDO VP50 Pro). Of course can also display a different video game system on each display.

I always rotated my CRT in stages. I'd turn it off, tip it up a bit and stick some books under the corner, then power it up for a bit, and then just repeat the process every twenty minutes or so until it was vertical.
I have no idea if that actually helped, but it didn't do any harm.

The room in that video has a japanese xbox 360 elite, japanese 60 gb ps3, modded slim ps2, Saturn, Super Famicom, SEGA Wondermega, famicom, xbox 1, PC-Engine Duo, Dreamcast, Wii and a PC hooked up. Can display any of those systems on any screen... however for non HD stuff I mainly output to the CRT. RGB if the system supports or is modded for it.

It sounds dumb but I don't know how to hook up my Saturn to this TV. I have 14 system cords, plugs and power supplys and I don't know what goes where. My X girlfriend did all this and I have no idea about these things. Can someone please show some photos of the cords and power supply and how it goes into the TV. It's a new flat tv and my old one took the old type connection. Thanks
