View Full Version : Dragon Quest VII getting a 3DS remake in Japan

At long last ArtePiazza (who created the scenario and CG for the original Dragon Quest VII and did the DS remales of DQ IV-V-VI) is doing a remake of Dragon Quest VII for the 3DS, which will come out in Japan next February. No news yet whether it will come out here as well (a good incentive to do so is for the European market, which didn't get a DQ game until DQ VIII for the PS2).
What surprises me is that it took so long to go ahead with the port (considering the popularity of the series in Japan). It also says a lot when a PS1 game is being remade for the 3DS instead of the Vita, no?

It's not really that long considering they've been busy with other DQ stuff (4-6 DS, 9, 10) the last few years. Also probably had to get up to speed on the 3DS since it's a relatively new system.
I don't think it says that much that a PSX game is going 3DS instead of Vita. It's probably just that Nintendo's demographics match much more closely to the DQ fanbase. Back when DQ7 first came out, it was either put it on PSX or N64, and it's not like FF7 where most of the discs were filled with movies. I don't think the game would've fit on an N64 cart even without the few minutes of cheesy FMV.
I do wonder if, with the jump in power from DS to 3DS, if this will look less like the DS games that in turn looked like DQ7 and 4 on the PSX, and more like DQ5 on the PS2.

I hope it comes to the states. One of my favs on the PSone.
Dragon Quest VII was/is brilliant, I put 175hrs into that game. Any RPG fan who hasn't played it is missing out on a very fun and massive adventure.
I see this 3DS re-release of DQ7 as being a mammoth improvement over the original, with which I was suitably unimpressed. I understand DQ7 was originally an SNES game, but by the time it was released for the PSX it was quite underwhelming by that console's standards from an audiovisual perspective with too much UI cruft left over from previous iterations. A good game, certainly, but a diamond in the rough which was too much so for my preference.
And speaking of unimpressed, I am *very* unimpressed with Square Enix with the emphasis on the Enix part. For years fans have been chomping at the bit for a Final Fantasy VII remake but were always rebuked claiming such a remake would require too much time and money because of how complex the game was, the need for all-new 3D models and environments, and the sheer amount of text in the game. But here with this news all that has been proven false as DQ7 is just as demanding of a remake, has even more content hour-wise, and demand for a remake of it is much less world-wide than that of FFVII.

If you look beyond Dragon Warrior 7 to the ninth installment in the series, you'll see that not much has changed in the series. The only massive improvements to the game that will be seen are going to be nothing more than graphical upgrades and an extra dungeon or two. The game itself will more than likely play the exact same, so it's hard for me to see you enjoying this one better just because of a new UI.
Not sure how you get it originally being a SNES game either. I haven't ever read anything about it. It just seems them using the same UI once again means they were going to original make it SNES? The game has many large 3D landscapes in towns, dungeons, and battles. Some things to point out is the Dragon Quest 3 remake was released late 2006. The Dragon Quest 4 remake on PSX uses the exact same graphics engine as Dragon Quest 7 does. World map, towns, dungeons, battles, UI, etc, all having graphics that look like they could have been ripped straight from Dragon Quest 7.
Dragon Quest has never really been an amazingly graphical game. Dragon Quest 6 and the Dragon Quest 3 remake were later in the SNES life and were also some of the better looking SNES games, but also Dragon Quest 8 and everything beyond. If you ask me, I think the Square Enix merger is a big influence on how Dragon Quest 9 and 10 look better than most games on the specific console, Square being an obvious graphics whore developer.

I hope this comes here. When they released it as Dragon Warrior 7 on the PSX 10 or however many years ago, it was amazing. That game honestly takes well over 100 hours to play through and having it on the 3DS will make it very easy for me to play it before bed and on my commute.

At long last, 3DS Dragon Quest 7 is coming to the U.S. and so is 3DS DQ8, in 2016.

What what?! Wooo RPGs, and Dragon Quest, and on a handheld so I can actually commit to it?! Score! :D Thanks for the links. Much this year I've slacked reading game news as I kind of distanced myself from the modern flotsam of gaming so that's a good set of links to enjoy and that's going on my google drive want list.

Yeah, I really did not think a localization of 3DS DQVII would happen. Pretty surprised.

It'd be funny if Nintendo publishing Dragon Quest games in North America again was a condition of putting Cloud into Smash. LOL

You know it is kind of offensive if you think about it that SE will not release a game here despite good sales data and basically makes Nintendo pay for it or it won't happen. It's kind of sleazy and shows the character of the company. At least after this wait nintendo stood up and did it.
DQVII (Dairy Queen VII ;)) was massively disappointing to me when I played it on PSX.
However, DQVIII is worth getting excited about! Level-5 knows how to make a great game!
*funny voice*: Dragon Quest VIII is all you need.

Didn't they say summer 2016 in the Nintendo Direct?
In other news, or umm, the same news, we can now buy the Fire Emblem Fates series limited edition which includes all three games on a single card. Thanks Nintendo! I always wanted to pay three times or atleast one overpriced cost for a single game.

from what I understand theres 3 different stories and that and they are only loosely related to one another so $80 divided by 3 is $26.6666~7

They're three different sides of a war, that's not loosely related. Fire Emblem the Sacred Stones had two stories and you only paid for one game. SaGa Frontier has seven different stories. Playstation games were $50 a piece, so did we pay $350 for the game? What about Tactics Ogre? Was that $150 then $3 for each map that wasn't story related? Hell's Gate alone would have cost $300. Did any of these games have disc locked content through the use of an exterior device like Amiibo? How about the Warcraft series. We didn't have to buy those separately, there were two different campaigns since the first game in the series. When an expansion was released for Warcraft 2 it included a two additional campaigns for one price. Warcraft 3 added four additional campaigns for one price. So was Warcraft 3 $300 after the expansion?
With Fire Emblem Fates, it's using the same graphics engine as Awakening, so you can be sure they threw the maps of this game game together almost as fast as they threw together Fire Emblem Awakening's DLC, the DLC that cost more than Fire Emblem Awakening cost at full price. It was announced for Japan just this year and released around five months later. They got the game out the door so fast they didn't even have time to promote it. Probably in development prior to the announcement six months tops, but even then Intelligent Systems were also working on Code Named STEAM so development would have been shared. Because it uses the same engine, most of the work was going in there using modified tiles and creating new maps. A single game that was developed in less than a year, for the cost of three separate games and people are still singing praises. Bravo Nintendo, bravo.

I erased Fates after watching that whole bit from my desire list. But to be fair, they do have a deal going in a couple ways. You buy one, you get the others for $20 instead of $40 each, but they also aren't real copies if you go through the eshop. But, it appears they'll have a limited (asshole scalpers be ready!!!) box set which has all 3 games in the Fates collection in one box for $70 that seems to be physical and had a custom carrying case in that box too. That's what the game really will cost you $70 (not $120.) $70 is a bit much still given it's the same game with different views of the action from the sides and while using an existing engine, but it could be far worse.
Now as far as dq7 goes thats SUMMER 2016, but dq8 that's up through 2016 holiday but both are out next year. I figure they'll release them around 4-5mo apart so people have time to finish one before the next as to not diminish or slice in to the sales of the first one.

The limited edition is $80 and it's already sold out at Best Buy and Amazon in less than a day. Tried to get a preorder in on Gamestop.com and it not wanting to work, so looks like I'll have to go to the store and preorder. Even though I'm bitching about it, if not for this collector's edition I wouldn't even be thinking about getting it, just sucks that I can't get it for $64 from Best Buy for how quickly it sold out. I didn't even know it was up on Best Buy until after it was sold out.

So the characters still won't be having feet, then?

I think they actually fixed that this game. They said they could have fixed it last game but didn't have enough time.

Damn typo'd it didn't I? Wow that's awful. The scalpers already bought it through thinking perhaps the contents would pre-order as the direct went live. I pity anyone who wants a real version of the game and not a short term nintendo network digital rental faux copy of the Fates trio of games. I hate to think what those will be re-selling for up on ebay both new and used. Fire Emblem games are already awful enough as it is to buy used up on ebay as anyone knows other than Awakening since it was very mass produced unlike the earlier games and still can be had at retail. The Wii and GC games just suck to buy and this package for 3DS will have probably even lower numbers made than those old titles.

People already selling preorders/presales on ebay. How the hell do you place a preorder up for sale/auction? And for a buck-fiddy? Disgusting. Hope the entire industry crashes hard. It needs a reboot.

Nah that wouldn't help, what's needed is either strictly enforced anti-scalping laws, or at the least new ebay policies blocking it entirely from happening. They just won't choose to do it at ebay because they get their cut. If you cut off their ability to hurt others, that would solve a huge problem with it at least on new goods. YOu can't stop it on the old, but on the new there's no right to do it and no value in it other than to harm others on what should be a readily available product.

Glad to hear this. Been waiting for this news for some time. I heard they cut all the boring stuff in the PS1 version out of the 3DS remake. However, I only went through the trouble of buying a brand new 2DS just to play Animal Crossing: New Leaf, but picking up DQ7 sounds tempting (I have DQ8 on PS2).
