:sigh: I hope I don't spoil some Christmas presents with this post. THAT MEANS YOU - DON'T KEEP READING.

Anyway..........

I've been picking up a lot of Coleco tabletops lately just because I've been able to find some really good deals, purchasing lots, repairing and trading / selling extras. I do full a teardown and cleaning as well as preventive maintenance and restoration on these whenever I come across them. That goes for all the "tabletop" handhelds from other manufacturers as well.

http://www.classicplastic.net/digitalpress/finds/DP-Finds-2012-11-19(01).jpg

Frogger, Frogger, Galaxian, Ms. Pac-Man are what I picked up over the past couple weeks. The first Frogger and Ms. Pac-Man were a package deal. The Frogger is missing the top sticker and battery door but Ms. Pac-Man is complete. Neither game had functioning sound but it turned out to be a detached piezo buzzer in both. Frogger looks as if it had been "repaired" by someone in the past as one of the screws doesn't match (although still close enough as far as size and threading) and the little plastic speaker cone was missing. Looks like they cut it out to get to the buzzer rather than twisting it off of the housing. Then they tried to tape the connections back onto the buzzer. In place of the speaker cone there was part of an envelope shoved in there to act as a substitute cone. After repairing the sound I made a new cone out of a file folder and everything works fine - not as ear-piercing loud as the plastic cone but pretty close. Honestly I'm surprised they didn't screw something else up while they were in there. Both games now work 100% with responsive controls and sound. The control panel sticker coating on Frogger is also cracked on the upper left, over the screw for the hood. Nothing can be done for that but it doesn't look terrible or anything.

The second Frogger was from a vintage store and ended up being free more or less. I specifically asked them if the battery compartment had any battery damage or corrosion to which I was told it was clean. After I paid for it I was contacted again and told the game wasn't always turning on. Before I could get back to them they contacted me again and said they think it's because of the battery door being loose, which I told them is common with the Coleco tabletops. I finally told them as long as the game was working at one point, has the door, and no damage in the battery compartment, then I will still take the game. When it arrived it not only were the battery leads caked with corrosion (that's why the battery connection is haphazard you morons) the whole thing had a very strong, very recent cigarette smell. I contacted them back and the owner got in touch with me. He said the employee who was answering my questions and that packed up the game has screwed up like that before and they're not going to be allowed to handle their online storefront anymore. (I don't care) On top of that he offered to refund my payment minus the shipping charge and allow me to keep the game. (That I do care about) After removing the battery leads, neutralizing the corrosion and giving them a good scrub everything is fine. I also was able to pull away most of the cigarette smell (usual cleaning, venting, dryer sheets). Has battery door, all the stickers, and honestly the joystick feels like the game was barely played.

Galaxian was off eBay and was very poorly listed. Got it for like $12.00 all said and done. This one was in very rough condition but I expected that on the way in. All the stickers are present although the marquee sticker was peeling. That glued back down nicely over the course of a couple days, unfolding and gluing it down little by little. The stickers have the usual Coleco glue bleed but honestly I'd say this has some of the nicer condition stickers of the Galaxian tabletops I've come across. A little glue marbled and dark around the edges but they cleaned up very nice. The control panel is a little dingy around the joystick and fire button holes and at the bottom from moisture getting underneath but it's still solid and the coating is good. An issue I didn't spot was cracks in the bezel at the top. Looks like someone worked on this game before and didn't know what they were doing as the bezel screws were applied too tightly at one point and their mounts cracked out. The bezel itself remained intact except for the upper right which did have a corner crack off but was still with the game. I ended up removing the broken standoffs and gluing the bezel down. No battery door here but I used a spare Pac-Man battery door in its place.

http://www.classicplastic.net/digitalpress/finds/DP-Finds-2012-11-19%2802%29.jpg

The first Frogger will be for sale if anyone here is interested, condition as described above. The second Frogger is for my girlfriend for Christmas (should explain the start of this post). Galaxian is for me. Ms. Pac-Man is for my girlfriend for Christmas as well.

This is from eBay as well, about $7.00 all said and done. A little generic cocktail table. I think it's a piece of doll furniture, at least that's the best explanation that both the seller and myself could figure.

http://www.classicplastic.net/digitalpress/finds/DP-Finds-2012-11-19%2803%29.jpg

It has a Pac-Man knockoff on the screen with little swirls. It's marked MGA but I don't remember them making any doll furniture like this since the size is all wrong for their respective toy lines. The seller said it was marked Epoch but it isn't, so I have no idea where they got that from. When I saw it while searching for some other stuff I had a Ryo Hazuki moment and had to have it. LOL

Pac-Man... One hundred yen per game... Guess I'll try it.

Hey, you're pretty good! Here's your prize!

Lastly, another tabletop, this time the Parker Bros Q*bert - a favorite of collectors. This one will actually be for sale as I have another on the way. Condition is very acceptable as far as these go. It was missing the left side sticker while the top sticker was included but a complete lost cause. In fact the right sticker shown in the picture is pretty much a lost cause as well. Control panel sticker is worn but nice as these go and the bezel sticker, while not great, is far from worn enough to require replacement. The game itself functions perfectly and if you haven't played this one you're missing out. This did come with the battery door which I will be migrating to the other one that is on the way. I intend to print replacement artwork for the top and sides on this one and then sell it without the battery door. The outer plastics are currently drying out after being torn down and given a good soak and cleaning (the inside bottom was pretty dirty on this one although the electronics were clean). I should have it all relabeled and buttoned up by next week so if you're interested in this one too, go ahead and let me know to get a jump before I formally post them in Buying & Selling.

http://www.classicplastic.net/digitalpress/finds/DP-Finds-2012-11-19%2804%29.jpg

With all the buying and selling and rebuilding on these I should end up back at even money once the first Frogger and this Q*bert are sold. Time to lay off the mini arcades for awhile though. Oh, I'm also up for trade for a Coleco Donkey Kong or a Zaxxon. Honestly right now I'm having Q*bert withdrawals while the plastics dry.

Coleco Tabletops

Thank you for posting that post. I now know what I'm going to focus on after finishing up my NES set. I've been meaning to get more of these tabletops in my collection (I only have 1 atm, Donkey Kong) for years now.

Collecting VFD tabletops can become extremely addicting. As far as the Coleco games go I'd say Frogger has the most accurate and addictive gameplay with a beautiful display. Then I'd call it a three way tie between Donkey Kong, Galaxian, and Ms. Pac-Man with maybe a slight edge to Ms. Pac-Man due to the changing mazes and moving bonus fruit. Pac-Man brings up the rear. It's far from terrible but man the sound effects are abrasive. I put Zaxxon down there too as while it's a technical achievement it just doesn't play very well. Donkey Kong Jr. doesn't count in my mind as one of the Coleco series since it's just a Game & Watch variant, although a VERY nice looking rework. Truth be told I enjoy the "Midway's Attackers" mode of Galaxian, which is essentially Space Invaders, more than the Galaxian mode. LOL

As I've said, Parker Bros Q*bert is an excellent conversion of the arcade game and fits in well with the Coleco games. Great responsive joystick, really good sound, and a nice big screen to show off the superb display with vibrant colors. Also has a silent option which isn't really an issue with Q*bert but would have been nice on the Coleco games.

However even with all the great VFD tabletops out there, my favorite is still Caveman, released by Tomy as well as Radio Shack under the Tandy name. I can't explain why I enjoy it so much but I could play it for hours.

AWESOME..

I used to collect these /tabletops,handhelds with a bad addiction...I was finding a lot at flea markets then....I actually still have a few things left, and a few rare handhelds listed on eBay..something's are keepers that I just can’t let go..

Many years ago...I met a guy across the country that had a large collection of VFD tabletops...both our ultimate goal was to own an adventure vision .We met bidding against each other on one and both lost to someone else at the end......He taught me a lot about VFDs..He’d lead me to deals on eBay for tabletops and handhelds.. as I was buying them up,that’s when I started collection Microvision too.....he sold me a Caveman,Tron(loved it)...and a Zaxxon...the Zaxxon was huge, impressive but the play was lousy..I had two of them side by side winning one on eBay for $25.00 .

I didn’t like the Zaxxon’s Size it didn’t line up nicely with other table tops,it was to high,.it disrupted my mini arcade look lol..

..You've been around for awhile and may remember my collection pictures,I'd have them lined up on tables lil a mini arcade..

I remember you talking about your collection years ago as well as when you started to sell them off back in an old Coleco repair thread. As long as I can keep coming out even money by buying the "right" games and the "right" lots I think I can keep it in moderation. LOL The problem with many of the tabletops is that there are a lot of them out there so they're readily available, they're not insanely priced especially if you pick and choose which to go after, there really isn't anything else like a VFD tabletop, and they continue to hold their value under the right conditions so they remain a popular collectible. All that adds up to something that can quickly get out of hand when it comes to buying. These things are 30+ years old, feature complex and potentially fragile displays, PCB's and control surfaces that were made as cheaply as possible, and yet they still work and are still fun to play.

Nice butcher knife box there, kitsune!

Thanks. Too bad it's beat up to crap. I can probably make a bit of money on it anyway.

Today I found: Twisted Metal Small Brawl for a buck.

Today I lost: Twenty bucks from my wallet. I have no idea what happened to the money. I had to go back home early. :(

It was probably karma due to ratting out a worker who snatched a ton of PS1 games for himself. I've been buying games from that particular booth for years. I wanted to look at the games, and I like the owner so I told him about the guy... who proceeded to make fun of me for ratting him out after I realized I'd lost my money. (I actually was going to buy some stuff from the booth owner but I lost the twenty so I had to leave them behind.)

I hope that fat fuck (the worker who hoarded the games) chokes on a taco. Blargh.

At Game stop my wife picked up this game for me..NEW But Opened by Game stop..UGH I hate that, not good if I was to give it as a gift..She got it for $24.99 BF sale price..

Toys R Us...another not crazy crowded store..Deals on games but nothing I needed ..
We got a bunch of gifts in this store, two people lines that’s it..We went in twice..
Picked up the lil Pac Man Candy Toy $4.00

After that we ate dinner and hen went to PEP BOYS..I saw ads on TV for great Black Friday Deals...
Gift Ideas..
I instantly found several things to get relatives for gifts, tool sets under big $10-15-20 signs..
Then noticed the Fine Print...After Mail in rebate..wait 7-10 weeks UGH!! so evrything that was 10 was 20 and so on..I dropped everything and walked out,no wonder they still had tons of the black friday deal items left...I HATE Mail In Rebates.

Sister in law dropped me off some DVDS for the kids, the PlayStation 3 unknown item..(not for candy...and 4 Angry Birds Plush Toys..(Keansburg Boardwalk Items before the storm damage..

I HAD TO HAVE THIS LIL PAC MAN TOY,I love mini arcade machine toys.

Sooooooooo.

I've been cleaning out the Steam sales via trades. So far I've gotten:

Homefront + Red Faction: Armageddon for $4.25 worth of games
Call of Juarez: The Cartel for $6 (from Ubisoft's online store)
Foreign Legion: Multi Massacre + EYE Divine Cybermancy + The Basement Collection + Bullet Candy for a Prey CD key that cost me two bucks
Legend of Grimlock + Dungeons of Dredmor: Conquest of the Wizardlands for $3ish

I'm surprised the deals haven't been that good this year. Or maybe I just got a ton of crap last year.

Flea Market vendor wanted $20 for Contra Force but he took $15. Without a doubt, this is my best "in the wild" find to date. It's a shame that the game is, you know, lame, but it is still a Contra game and a rare one at that, mind you. Interestingly, the guy wanted $20 for Yoshi as well, so this fellow didn't really know what NES games are worth. Mike Tyson- $50, of course.

I just drove from Seattle to DC in the span of a week. During the drive, I stopped off back home at a nice small chain of stores called G2K games. And, well, I went on a little bit of a shopping spree. I also stopped in to see a friend, and he'd found a box containing the last remnants of his video game collection that I acquired off of him over 5 years ago. Given a couple of games that were contained in it, and as I paid and considered the transaction complete, I offered to pay him a little more out of pocket or to make a payment plan to give him a fair value for the games, but he insisted that they were mine as I had bought the entire collection. The Mega Man alone made the stop in well worth it.

So, here is the photo of my finds: (It's a bit hard to make out but a list follows)

TARGET for Xbox live or 3 Month membership cards, not sure which was which but it was EASY ..The cards were right up at the register,no wait ..the only negative was they were not ringing up a the BF price so you had to watch the clerk when scanning, then mention the sale in the stores AD..no problem, instantly fixed..We bought several as gifts..I don’t buy them to resell them..This was Easy in and out of store]

I had the same issue at Target when they rung up my 1600 Microsoft Points card. It was on sale for $10 but still rang up for $19.99 but I just showed them the picture in the ad and they changed it pretty quickly.

http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr306/THE-1-2-P/GEDC2099.jpg

True Blood season 3 dvd $10
True Blood season 4 dvd $10
Dance Central 3(Kinect) $15
Kinect Sports: Ultimate Collection(Kinect) $15
Battlefield 3: Premium(360) $25
Call of Duty: Black Ops LTO(360) $15
Max Payne 3(360) x2 $8.99 each
Dead Island: GOTY edition(360) $7.99
Batman: Arkham City GOTY edition(360) $15
1600 Microsoft Points card(360) $10
32 GB USB Flash Drive $15

And this is the reason I still shop on Black Friday despite how many people still insist there aren't any good deals. And half of that stuff was bought from the comfort of my own home. But I had to take my niece out since she wanted to go shopping so I picked up a few extra things. I hadn't planned on picking up Arkham City but after seeing the price of it while in Target I jumped all over that sale. And since people were snatching big handfulls of 1600 point cards I decided to grab one of those as well.

Max Payne 3 was probably the best deal considering that just came out this year and probably won't be rebranded as a platinum hits title for atleast another year. And even then it still won't be priced below $10. Dead Island was also a good deal, as was Dance Central 3 since it's only been out a month or two. I grabbed the last two seasons of True Blood but I still haven't even watched the first two seasons I picked up during last years Black Friday sale for the same price. And the flash drive was picked up for the sole purpose of being able to take my account with me when I go over my girlfriends house. I know I most likely won't ever use that much but it's the current maximum allowed on the 360 and it was cheap so why not.

Lilo and Stitch Disney Edition (#88 out of 30000, sealed) - $2
Moby - Songs - $1

I picked up that Lilo and Stitch CD out of curiosity, but I can't find much information on it, other than it's a limited edition exclusive to Disney's own store within their theme parks. I kinda want to keep it for the Elvis songs -and kinda want to burn it for the Wynonna and A-Teens songs. I think I'll just sell it on eBay and see how it goes.

Forgot to post this when my father-in-law brought it to me last weekend. Has component inputs, but no s-video :( Wish I could have gotten his ginormous one that he got rid of not too long ago, but there is just no way I could deal with or have space for one of those 350lb behemoths. This is much more manageable.

Oh man, I remember seeing the ad for Graduation in MixxZine... Is it any fun? As for Mixx, that mag had some awesome stories- anybody know if Parasyte continued on its own (I'm too lazy to google, evidently)?

Just got Alone in the Dark in the mail. Cost me $5.50-ish shipped from Amazon.

I found The Guy Game for PS2 (some scratches, with bad artwork) for two bucks and a GH Megaman Legends (very scratched, no back artwork) for a low price. Megaman should be easy to repair, and it'll be up for trade.

I didn't yet learn how to play these kinds of games. Too bad it's low resolution. Small window size is better than a stretched mess I suppose.

Nabbed a lot on ebay for a total of $12 (let's say 3 bucks a game):

Double Dragon (Genesis) (Pretty rare from what I can tell, averaging $20 alone online)
Universal Soldier (Genesis) (Movie tie-in edit of Turrican 2)
Super Off-Road (Genesis) (Arcade port, I grew up with the completely different "Baja" version for SNES so it'll be interesting to try this one out)
Dark Castle (Genesis) (easily the worst video game on the system, and I've now the pleasure of owning it :P)

All EA/Accolade Style unlicensed carts.

Also got the following from a local store a few weeks ago:

Ranger-X (Genesis) - $3 (had to deal with another store's on-label sticker, but saved the cart and totally worth it for the price)
Midnight Resistance (Genesis) - $3 (Somewhat uncommon from what I could tell and a pretty fun contra knockoff, beaten up a tad with a little label damage in the bottom-left corner but works like a dream)
Decap Attack (Genesis) - $3 (Great condition physically, but a pain to boot and the cart seems to run when it wants to, prolly should give it a good cleaning sometime)
Ecco 2 Boxed (Genesis) - $3 (Could look better physically, but for $3 I'm not complaining)
Super Hydlide (Genesis) - $4 (tiny tear near the top, works great and SRAM still works too!)
Super Street Fighter II (Genesis) - $5 (Really great condition, works alright)
Dr. Robonik's Mean Bean Machine (Game Gear) - $5 (Jumped when I saw this, it's surprisingly hard to come by in the wild)
Dashin Desperadoes Complete in Box (Genesis) - $8 (Amazing condition on everything, not a single flaw, boots up with ease)

With Dr. R, I have every US Sonic Game for the game gear. Just need the imports now (Drift and Skypatrol)

Pics when I stop feeling lazy.

Parasyte had graphic novels published by Mixx, but the series has since been license-rescued and published by Kodansha Comics USA in unflipped format.

Went into a thrift store I infrequently go to. I see a box of stuff behind the counter that looked like it was maybe a 2600 + games or something. The lady brought it up and it turned out to be a Fairchild Channel F plus literally every game released. They said some guy just donated it to their store a week ago. The craziest part is there are tons of pamphlets and stuff that came with it + both of the mail order games as well, in great shape. Here are some pics:

Nice..I picked up one of those ginormous ones from around the corner.. had to use a wheel cart to move it it's so heavy..I have it in the basement i'd need two people to get it up here..I plugged the power cord in down the basement and the screen came on fuzzy so i assume it works
I had picked up three others(Flat screen CRT) local through the year and none worked : (..two are outside ,on the side of my house as the town doesn't take them..
someone came and bashed a whole on the side of the bigger TV outside and broke off the back of the tube I guess for the copper..the smaller tv is a match for a TV I have in my hall with a bad color cap..i might tear that TV up and pull the circuit board for the caps before someone else tears it up..

Friday I picked up a 25inch TV on the curb, the remote manual and paperwork still in the original bag tied to the TV..not sure if it works but I'd rather grab it and it not work then had passed it up and wondered..

I see tons of TVs a the flea market, cheap and nt cheap..Problem is they are not tested(oh sure it work) and these people will sell you a dead animal if they could get away with it.
