OK, so I've been "collecting" for about a year now and just last night I realized that I have a pretty respectable NES collection. With Christmas coming up I'll probably add about 5 games to my list (I got a few ideas from one of my previous threads), however I'd love some opinions on what 3 games that are "must haves". Below is my current list:

Bases Loaded
Batman
Burger Time
Castelvania III
Contra
Donkey Kong Classics
Duck Tales
Excite Bike
Kid Icarus
Kiwi Kraze
Kung Fu
Kurby's Adventure
Legend of Zelda
Little Nemo
Mario Golf
Mega Man II
Mega Man III
Metroid
NARC
Ninja Gaiden
Pro Wrestling
Punch Out
RBI Baseball 3
Recue Rangers
River City Ransom
Star Tropics
Super Marior Bro.
Super Marior Bro. 3
T&C Surf Design
Techmo Bowl
Techmo Super Bowl
Tetris
TMNT Arcade
Xevious
Zanac

You have many of the essentials, but here are some omissions from your collection that are worth correcting:

Super Mario Bros. 2
Bionic Commando
Metal Storm
Rad Racer (the best racing game on the NES despite being the first)
Adventure Island
Kickle Cubicle

Let me also recommend two off-beat classics: Phantom Fighter and Clash at Demonhead. Both of these games won't make the run of the mill NES top 10 list, but I think they each have a unique and fun flavor and they are both cheap so give 'em a try.

Super C, Kirbys Adventure, Battletoads...i could go on forever, but you said 3

Gunstar Hero

Galaga
Pac-Man
Mario Bros.
Bubble Bobble
Adventure Island

All of these are awesome NES ports of awesome arcade games :)

Some more:

Battletoads
Zelda 2
Life Force
Duck Hunt
Castlevania
Legendary Wings
Double Dragon
Gradius
Wizards and Warriors
Super C
Adventures of Lolo
Final Fantasy
Dragon Warrior

Pick any three of those and you'll be fine :)

It can be more than three, I'm only getting about 5 games so I wanted people to really concentrate on those top essential games. I've decided that 'Bubble Bobble' is going to be one of them and maybe one or two more from my "personal best" thread

BTW, I'm good on RPG's right now. I really don't have the time to put into them, otherwise I'd probably get Willow which I hear good things about.

Also, is Battle Toads really that good. I know it get's alot of hype, but I've heard negative things about it. I use to love Double Dragon as a kid, but I've found alot of the games I liked then don't translate that well (ie NARC and T&C Surf in my list) I loved Spy Hunter and Rampage, but I know I wouldn't enjoy those games now. Plus I have River City which is in the same vein as Double Dragon.

I think it's fun when playing it with a friend but not alone. I included it forgetting that one player isn't all that great it's mostly just frustrating and turns out not to be fun. It's a blast with two people because instead of shared frustration it turns into a hell of a good time with laughing at how difficult it is but not really caring. It has become one of those overly hyped games that IS good, just not amazingly good (Earthbound to me is another example of these kind of games).

As much as some hardcore gamers love to gloat that Battletoads isn't that hard, the third level is as far as MANY gamers ever get, which is a shame because the game is really fun. Can the third board's pattern and the timing be memorized and bested? I'm sure, but those damn jetbikes still haunt me from all of those years ago and I'd rather not go back there. I enjoyed the primary Double Dragon/ beat 'em up mode on the game and felt it was a shame that Rare wanted the game to wear so many damn hats with each level changing play mechanics.

I use to love Double Dragon as a kid...

The arcade was magic for the first one wasn't it? Double Dragon II is the best in the series for the NES hands down, by the way. Oh, and in case you didn't know:

Of course the whole too many hats complaint doesn't apply to an incredible homage to the NES like Abobo's Big Adventure. A badass of Abobo's caliber can do whatever the f*ck he wants.

Jackal

It was my favorite game for many years.

The scenes at 30 sec. and 1:13 are awsome

Kabuki Quantum Fighter, Shatterhand, Rollergames, and Isolated Warrior are some underrated gems.

I don't think anyone mentioned Blaster Master or Rygar.

and it's nearly a crime. Your whole collection is posted, and I don't see even one frantic shooter. Abadox, Gradius, Gun-Nac, Terra Cresta (say goodbye to your thumbs on that one), SCAT, Star Force, etc. There is a glaring whole in your life that you must fix immediately!! Oh, and for your three games you should get M.C. Kids, Totally Rad, and one that slips my mind right now, but I'm sure if I look at my handle (name) long enough it might come to me.... Seriously, some of the best days for your collection are yet to come. Have fun with it. One last thing, if you've already got TMNT2 you'll probably like The Manhattan Project as well.

P.S. Get Pinball Quest, too.

Rather than hitting you with a big list of games I am just going to make a case for one game that is really underrated and that game is Kickmaster. It's a great action sidescrolling game with light RPG such as experience points.

The presentation and gameplay are both excellent, but what really makes it stand out is all the crazy karate moves you acquire along the way though the experience points. By the end it almost starts to feel like a fighting game because you will have a barrage of moves at your disposal such as knee drops, roundhouse kicks, jump kicks, and flip kicks.

I'm a platformer junkie so I have played almost all of them on the NES and have found many hidden gems over the years, but very few amazed me quite like Kickmaster did.

Micro Machines: Great one player or multiplayer game. MUST OWN!!!

Ms. Pacman: Get the Tengen version cuz it has a coop two player game with an option for new mazes. GREAT version. MUST OWN!!!

Pacmania: Pacman goes to Legoland. Great game!

Solar Jetman: Reminds me a Gravitar(old arcade game) mixed with Blaster Master. Must Own!!!

Gun.smoke is one my favorite games for the NES, and based on earlier threads of yours, I think you'd like it. It's an arcade style vertical shooter with a western theme. A lot of fun, albeit a little on the easy side.

Also, Vice: Project Doom.

Micro Machines and Pacmania are awesome.

3 games not on the OP's list? I'd say Blaster Master, Crystalis, and Bubble Bobble.

So here are the 5 that I've settled on:

Bubble Bobble
Dr. Mario
Ms. Pac Man (Tengen)
Blaster Master
Mr. Gimmick!

After these I'll tackle:
Kickmaster
Pipe Dreams

Kickmaster looked really good and I look forward to playing it down the road. Thanks for the suggestion ButtonMasher, I would have never discovered this game.
