Mr. Jaggers writes "Chris Roberts, game designer of Wing Commander fame, has had great success with his new crowd-funded Star Citizen project — so much that the $2m base goal has been smashed with weeks to go on the Kickstarter portion of the campaign. Now Chris is floating a list of stretch goals for fans to vote on, with Linux and Mac support both listed as stretch goal candidates. Since Star Citizen is based on the popular CryENGINE 3 game engine, these stretch goals are equivalent to funding Linux and Mac ports of CryENGINE. Chris couldn't make any absolute promises yet, since he doesn't own the engine, but CryENGINE 3 already supports Android, so at least there is existing OpenGL ES support to be leveraged towards adding Linux and Mac OpenGL support. If there is enough outpouring of cross-platform support from fans in this poll, Star Citizen could turn out to be the high-profile game that brings a AAA game engine to the growing Mac and Linux gaming communities — analogous to the role played by Wasteland 2 in bringing official Linux support to the Unity 4 engine popular among so many Indie developers."http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png (http://twitter.com/home?status=Will+the+Star+Citizen+Project+Fund+Lin ux+and+Mac+Ports+For+CryENGINE+3%3F%3A+http%3A%2F% 2Fbit.ly%2FQg375g)http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png (http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fsto ry%2F12%2F11%2F04%2F1820209%2Fwill-the-star-citizen-project-fund-linux-and-mac-ports-for-cryengine-3%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfacebook) http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png (http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://games.slashdot.org/story/12/11/04/1820209/will-the-star-citizen-project-fund-linux-and-mac-ports-for-cryengine-3?utm_source=slashdot&utm_medium=googleplus)

As of today the Star Citizen/Squadron 42 project (http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen-project/) has raised $4,126,188 USD through both its Web site and Kickstarter (the majority of which was acquired through its Web site). By the end of its campaign in two days it is estimated that it will cull the most money ever for a crowd-funded game project, beating Double Fine Adventure with ease.

Personally I am looking forward to playing this new game from the creator of Wing Commander as that series is one of my favorites. Yet I am apprehensive because with the way this game is being talked up, it will definitely require a new computer purchase - or at least an upgrade purchase - in order to play it. I also don't like how it is going to be using CryEngine 3 because of the general aesthetic of software made with that game engine. Word is that Star Citizen will need a new computer and graphics card to be bought at the time of release in 2014 with a price totaling $600 to $700 just to be able to play it: 64-bit all the way, tons of RAM, Windows 7/8 due to it using "all the latest from DirectX 11," and at least a $100+ graphics card. No console port is planned due to the complexities of the controls and demands put on computer hardware being beyond what even the next PlayStation and Xbox promise... The developer says, "No compromise."

I'm happy to pledge to the project to reserve my copy of the game and a personal space ship and acquire a white citizen's card, but I doubt I'll be buying a new computer or upgrading my current PC unless the price of that upgrade is low enough. I'll just get around to playing Star Citizen once I do have powerful computer hardware.
