So I picked up a copy of Mega Man X4 a few weeks ago, and was super excited to play it (huge Mega Man fan from way back, but missed most of the X series). But as I got playing it I kept getting distracted by its music tracks. Which appear to be hanging up and skipping almost universally.

Inspecting the disc there seems to be a blemish on the data side of the disc that I can't buff out. I suspect this is the problem. Is there anything I might be able to do? Or perhaps some way to disable music entirely as I play?

Mute button on your tv? I hate that though, when I play on tv I want to hear the game. :/ If you can turn off the music only then its in options under sound.

You could try a tiny amount of plastic polish and a microfiber towel to get the blemish worked out enough to where it doesn't cause issues. I'd try REALLY hard to stay right on top of the blemish though. No sense in potentially causing more damage.

When you say the data side do you mean the top or the bottom? Remember, the data is really on the top of the plastic disc. If there's a scratch there (you can see through the disc) then you're pretty much done.

Oh. On the bottom. The black side.

The music is one of the real high points of X4. I'd take the disc somewhere with a resurfacing machine and hope that they do a good job with it.

If the music skips, then I'd be that some of the videos do as well. You might get freezes on those scratched sections. If repairing the disc isn't an option, I'd suggest playing it on a PS3 or a PS2, which are more likely to read through the rough spots than an original PSX.
