as of now it's Tetris, I think I just played it for an hour; which to me is a long time for a single sitting playing a game. Zanac is a close second but it's a little to hyper active.

Goldeneye on the N64 came out when I was in college. We use to smoke copious amounts of pot ond play for hours. I was always Odd Job (and always kneeling made a hard target)

I'm a big Tetris fan myself, but fighting games are my real vice.
The Street Fighter series in general, and more specifically SF2HF, Super SF2 Turbo, and SF Alpha 3, still eat up a significant portion of my gaming time, thanks in part to online services like GGPO and Supercade.
I also just can't seem to put down Halo Custom Edition for PC.

Anything in the Bubble Bobble series (Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands, Parasol Stars, Bubble Symphony, Bubble Memories, Bubble Bobble Part 2 NES), with the exception of the recent games (except BB Plus on Wii which is ok).

Puzzle Bobble also falls into that series, it too can be addictive.

I think first person shooters always are that thing i can't put down.

Back in the hay days of Quake 2 i would sit there and just go to town on that game on line. Learned alot from a really good player. Rocket jump, how to anticipate where to shoot as the person is moving around. (like with rockets you always shoot slightly ahead of your enemy to give the rocket time to reach them dead on)

Dragon's Lair

Mastered the arcade version the hard way as a young'un and ever since the first arcade perfect home versions started rolling out (starting with the DAPHNE emulator and then the official HD Remasters/Blu-Ray releases onward) I've probably made my way through the castle 1,000 times or so.

Devil's Crush is a game I could pick up and enjoy at any time of any day. I've been on a bit of a SFII binge as of late, though, especially Special Champion Edition on Genesis -- there's another one that perpetually draws my interest and effortlessly wastes my time. These are two games that instantly spring to mind when I want to play something, or rather, they spring to mind and I instantly want to play them.

I am truly amazed I'm the first person in this thread to mention Civlization. 2, 3 or 5- doesn't matter which. I once completed an entire game of Civ 2- from 4000BC to arriving at Alpha Centauri- in one sitting. I immediately regretted it, but god that game is addictive.

Brigandine Legend of Forsena.

Six countries in a Risk/Romance of the Three Kingdoms style take over the world world map, amazing TRPG. Brigandine Grand Edition is an update and includes multiplayer up to six players, one each country, but being in Japanese, I prefer to play the original.

Just like if you were to play other take over the world style games, no two games ever play alike. You and the enemies might decide to use different characters in each location, level up monsters differently, get different characters/items/etc on quests, whatever.

I usually pick this game up to play every couple of months and try to finish it as quickly as possible. The fastest I've finished the game is with Norgard, one month inito the next year. So a very short time. Working on finishing it one time before the end of the first year. So just need to do it one month quicker.

There's seriously no Diablo II Addicts on here? That game occupied my life probably over 15 hours a day for many years from middle school to high school, on and off. Finally gave it up when I realized it was affecting my mood, and in-game events made me upset or depressed! Now THAT'S addiction.

The length is really based on how long it takes for you to take over Forsena(the area that they're in.) Whether you win or lose a battle, whether you wait any turns to build up mana to acquire monsters, whether you use turns to move knights from one city to another(which they can't attack a location if they've moved that same month on the world map,) whether you go on quests with knights(could end up taking one month or more.) I'd say the average game might last between 10-20 hours.

One thing I highly recommend is to turn off the battle animations. They look good, but they'll end up annoying you when you've seen them for the 100th time as it'll take a 30 minute battle to around an hour and 30 minutes. Here's a video example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1isNoXpSLD8

I've played Doom and Quake way more than any other FPS, but lately I've been hooked on homebrew PC ports of Doom64. At first it was just because I didn't feel like digging the N64 out of the closet, but now I'm just spoiled by the kb&m controls and enhanced graphics.
There's something about those early id games that just pulls me in and takes me to dark and wonderful places.

My most addictive is also my most favorite game ever...The Addams Family Pinball machine. I could spends hours a day, ever day playing that thing constantly. I worked in an arcade in early to mid 90's and I remember dumping TONS of credits into this machine.

Other notable titles I can think of that I was hopelessly addicted to....

Dragon Force (Saturn). I purposely do not have a Saturn hooked up because I know I will get sucked back into playing this game. For as many hours as I've put into it, surprisingly I have never beaten it. I almost always choose Wein and the Highland army and spend days, weeks, months amassing levels, fortifying castles, and maximizing all generals to have all troop types.

Age of Mythology (PC). Another game I purposely avoid. I refuse to install it on my computer out of fear I'll lose days of my life to it again. Like Dragon Force, I have this incessant need to do everything including cutting down every tree, mining every gold mine, and fishing every school.

Everquest/World of Warcraft (PC). Between these two PC games, I've been playing MMOs consistently since 1999. @_@ That certainly deserves consideration for being called addicting strictly on the time consumed playing over those 14+ years. I've been on WoW since launch and still find the game entertaining to this day.

Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire (GBA). This is one game I've had trouble putting down. Luckily for me it has a save option that lets you take a break and come back to it later. I've done just that several times over hundreds of games. I far prefer the Sapphire table to the Ruby one but the Ruby one is nice in its own way.

Duke Nukem 3D (PC). I don't play many FPS games at all anymore but back in the day I was all about the likes of Doom I&II, Descent, Rise of the Triad, Quake, and Duke Nukem 3D. I was absolutely hooked on Duke, so much so that I bought books and CDs instructing me how to design levels (which I never did). Back then I was so intent on building a deathmatch map based on the warehouse I was working at. :ass:

Outrun2006 is pretty high up there. Klax, Bust-A-Move 2: Arcade Edition and Nights into Dreams are all also contenders, but thinking back, Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire probably had me hooked more than any game in the past 10 years.

I was going to say Tetris but then I realized I played Halo 2 until they shut the servers down. Thats almost a full 6 years straight. My stats on that game for online multiplayer were insane. I still can't believe how many real people I killed. And if the game gets a remake like they did for Halo: CE last year the killing and time I put into that game will continue.

I have had the same experience.

As for another, I can credit feed Mushihimesama anytime. It's the combo of visuals and music. Rez is that way for me too.

I also second the Outrun 2006 and add Daytona HD. The original Xbox Outrun release was the first time I ever felt that Sega got the home version of one of their arcade racers totally right; other than Crazy Taxi on DC.

The Ridge Racer games are also addictive. The original Playstation release is probably my most played game ever actually. The Turbo Mode bonus disc that came with R4 is my favorite due to the obvious, and the music track "Grip."

I find level grinding in 90's RPG's to be addictive when its simple. I hated grinding in FF 10 because of the beads, they should just beat enemies and have their powers increase automatically. The battle systems can have depth and can be a big attraction to games, and thats awesome, but I find powering up should be very simple and basic. At most you should choose where the leveling ups go to for your skills and power, maybe even give other weaker characters who join your party your exp points, but playing with beads is time consuming boring and ultimately a waist of time.

So yeah, level grinding can be addictive to me.

And Solitaire and Tetris are addictive games too.

Phantasy Star Online on the DC, and later on the Gamecube. I actually played more hours offline than on, but liked that it was the same character and that the progress carried over. The three hit basic fighting mechanic felt so good, and the random levels made it endlessly playable. Definitely a desert island game for me.

The original Civilization would be right up there as well.

Favorite game of all-time? This may sound odd but it would be AD&D Slayer for the 3DO, no other game has given me the memories and the excitement I had of playing that game and the countless hours spent with my friend (who died in 2009) will live on in my heart forever.

Most addictive? Probably World of Warcraft for the PC, but if I had to pick console games that I'd say probably something like Super Mario 3 since I would play that game over and over and over and still fire it up to this gay. I'm sure Tetris for the GameBoy would be up there for me as well, alongside Them Park for the 3DO. Also, Breakout 2000 for the Jaguar ranks among one of the most addictive games I've ever played.

In Coast 2 Coast mode I had no trouble getting AA or AAA for each of the challenges that I unlocked, but I can't even advance to the second girl because there are so many challenges that I don't have access to that my average is still C. Unlocking all of the challenges and special requests is just ridiculously difficult compared to actually getting good scores for them.
It's just a really unbalanced progression system.

You know, between AD&D: Slayers, Doom, The Incredible Machine, Street Fighter II Turbo, Trip'D, Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller, Alone in the Dark, Samurai Showdown, Myst, Gex, Star Fighter, Twisted: The Gameshow, Shanghai III: Triple Threat, etc. I played my 3D0 more than any other console from that generation. I've never really thought about that until now. I usually ended up getting the cross platform titles for 3DO because they were always DIRT cheap used at EB.

While not technically made before 1990, it plays like a retro game, and in fact here's a description about it taken from Indie Games:

"...play by actually typing in commands... It does feel quite a bit like a boardgame and generally has you capturing squares, building farms, hiring wizards, stealing from your neighbors, inciting revolutions, forming alliances and even attempting to bless everyone, while fighting to gather all the resources a powerful master of the grid would need..."

Putting more thought into this, two other games come to mind.

Altered Beast. I love this game so damn much and can't really explain why. I played the hell out of it when I was a kid, it's inclusion in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection was one of the three main buying points of the game (the other two being I had just got a PS3 with no games and having access to all the Phantasy Star games) and now have it on my system at all times via PSN+.

Joust. Holy crap, Joust. My local arcade had this when I was a kid. It was the oldest cabinet in the entire arcade by a clear mile and I'm fairly sure that only a few people played it. I think of this game from time to time, but I haven't actually played it in years (aside from the Joust inspired mini-game in WoW).

Although my avatar is from Civilization IV, my 'vote' for most addictive game easily goes to Civilization II.

My second vote, were I to be granted one, would go to the original Civilization :)

It's not even close as to how much time I've spent playing Civ II/Civ versus any other game (like Tetris, which I've also played an awful lot).

It's like a sports game, in that each time you play nothing is quite the same, but is immensely more satisfying IMO.

An interesting question and there are several candidates on various systems,it is obviously a game that still can be played today after many years so i think that a multiplayer game like Mario Kart on Snes could be the one for me, after that maybe something like Doom on PS.
I though Tertris on GB would have been mentioned more.
