Back when Tekken 2 came out on PSOne, a local bar had a huge 16 foot projection TV(HUGE back then and cost the guy almost 20K). I helped set up a local tournament at the place and it worked out great. I would say it should be just fine.

If it's an LCD projector the experience is usually not that great in my experience. The games are always scaled in a rather ugly way to the native resolution of the projector, and there is massive input delay.

Now, if you could track down an old CRT projector with RGB inputs it should be very nice indeed.

I actually meant the type that shines on the wall.

Whenever a big PS3 release comes out, my cousin and my brother pick it up at a midnight release and head down to the basement.
My brother hooks up his PS3 to the TV, and my cousin hooks his up to a projector.
He has a really expensive projector, and it looks no worse than it does on the TV.

I'm an eighth grade math teacher (pre-algebra through geometry) and during student led conferences I bring in my SNES and hook up Tetris Attacks to the LCD (in the past it used to be Space Megaforce) for the younger siblings to play while their older brothers\sisters lead their conferences. It looks great, and the kids have a blast. Personally I play Mr. Do! during my downtime between conference slots and I've thoroughly enjoyed that.

Besides the SNES, I've also hooked up my Genesis through the LCD to play NHL '94 with a colleague.

Both systems, IMO, look great.

I have an Epson Powerlite 720p home theater projector. While the picture was huge, the thing about projectors that kills it for me is contrast ratio. The blacks are grey, and the brightness of the projection itself illuminates the room which washes the picture out some more. If I turn the brightness down, then the colors are too dark. The best picture I can get out of that projector (10,000:1 contrast ratio) is shite compared to a bigscreen plasma or LCD. If you're going to drop a grand or more on a video display, I recommend a big flatscreen over a projector unless you don't mind trading picture quality for a bigger screen.

My old setup- (27" TV underneath)

IMO, they're great for local multiplayer games. Everyone gets their own 40+" TV. But, as already stated, the picture is sorta meh. I wouldn't use one as my only screen on which to play games. If you can afford the room for both a tube/panel and the projector, AND really like playing with lots of friends, then it's probably not a bad investment.

I was talking about the type that shines on a wall...

These can use LCD or CRT technology. There's also DLP, but they have most of the shortcomings of LCD when it comes to gaming.

All my "Current Gen" systems are played on my projector and the quality is fantastic here are a few pictures showing it off:

PS as always I am using my iPad for pictures so they are much lower quality than that of the actual projector. The games and bluray movies look absolutely astounding on it! It is a couple thousand dollar projector however :P
