Few joys exist in our hobby IMHO like finally trekking your way through that classic/highly regarded game that you've been meaning to get around to for years but never did. Just the satisfaction of finally playing/beating them and never having to wonder ever again, "So, what's all the racket about, eh?" Sure I love discovering hidden gems, but the AAA games so to speak have earned their rep for a good reason, and it's always awesome finally discovering exactly where you stand with them.
I recently defeated, for the first time ever, DKC and DKC2. I loved both experiences and am now, for the first time ever, at long last making my way through Earthbound (after buying the cart originally in 2006... it finally made its way to the top of my queue). These are 3 of the most highly regarded SNES games... and I'm loving them so much. I played DKC a bit back in '94, but never beated it. I missed out completely on DKC2 and EB and so they are both fresh experiences for me.
1. Your thoughts on DKC2?
2. Your thoughts on EB? (NO spoilers, please)
3. What was the last "highly regarded" game that you played/beated for the FIRST time ever?
4. What is the most "highly regarded" game you have yet to play on the major systems?
Me:
1. Loved it, but to be honest, I think I enjoy DKC more by a hair
2. Loving it so far. The suburban setting is an awesome RPG backdrop. I can't believe I waited all these years until playing it. I look forward to beating it soon so I can fire up another never-before-played RPG in time for Christmas season, as I love playing the RPG genre this time of the year
3. DKC2
4. I'll answer just for SNES... hmmm. Probably Kirby Superstar, Starfox, or Mystical Ninja. Import wise Rockman and Forte, Star Ocean, or Tales of Phantasia. Earlier this year SNES-wise it was Super Mario RPG, Lufia II and Earthbound but I've been crossing them off the ole to-play list one by one :)
