At first, I wanted to get a USB Super Nintendo controller, Nintendo, and Genesis controller. The site calls them RetroPads. But they are unavailable.
How are the USB adapters? The site calls them RetroPorts.
If anything, have any of you used similar products? How were they?

I take it they use actual retro controllers and refab them to use usb capabilities.
I on one hand find that horrible people are doing stuff like this to items no longer in production... Once its gone its gone.
But on the other hand as a car enthusiast I don't mind when people chop up 60-80 year old cars and turn them into a custom machine. Soooooo what the hell right? why not a game console/controller

They're just people trying to live like the rest of us. If you want them bad enough you'll pay the higher price for the rarer item, right?
I have 3 or 4 Super Nintendo controllers. I just want one of those RetroPads, or the RetroPort since that's all that's available now.
wanted to make sure they were good

I have the Super RetroPort and the Atari RetroPort from them. Some of the folks here, myself included, have bought PowerPaks from that site as well. I believe it's just a one-man operation, and he's reputable. Good products, fairly quick service. I've emailed him questions before about his products, and he's gotten back with me after a couple of days.

Could be worse... I remember the time when some sites were suggested hacking up SNES controllers to make them PC GamePort controllers.
They haven't made PCs with GamePorts since... 1999? :(
(or so I'm guessing since that's the last time I could buy a PC GamePort-compatible controller at Best Buy.)

At least there are millions of controllers out there ;)

That number dwindles every day.
So remember kids, buy a knock off USB controller, save a veteran controller.

I have the adapters for NES and SNES, and they're both great. I don't really get the appeal of the converted controllers myself. Why keep an extra controller around when I can use the same controller on my NES/SNES and my PC, with simply popping an adapter on for the latter?

Some people don't have/want said console, and just want a controller to use while playing emulators.

Yeah, but it would probably be cheaper to just buy the adapter and pick up a controller for a couple bucks at a thrift store rather than pay $40 to get a modified controller. A lot cheaper to replace too if the controller somehow breaks down.

I didn't say they were smart. :p

Depending on the design of the adapter there may be a small amount of input delay present. The USB versions may replace the IC on the controller with a new one, and operate completely as a USB controller.
However, that's a big maybe. More likely the USB versions just have the adapter built into the controller, and the original IC is still in there.

Have the SNES adapter, zero issues and no form of any lag. Functions well enough for me emulating NES as well, but I also have a Powerpak for that.
