Hey all,
So I'm currently negotiating with a Craigslist seller for a modded fat PS2. I'm not sure exactly which model it is, but the seller says it's in good condition and never needed any repair so far.
He's still trying to locate the hookups for the system. But it won't matter if he doesn't find them, as I can use the cables from my unmodded system instead.
So, what would a the system be worth with and without the hookups?

That probably really depends on what chip is inside.

The seller doesn't remember exactly what chip he had installed, only that it was a "blue mod chip".
Well, it doesn't matter now anyway. The deal fell though because we live too far away from each other to meet up, and shipping would cost way to much as well.
Although, I do have another question: Does anyone know of reliable site to buy a flip top case mod for a fat PS2, and a set of Swap Magic disks? Also, how difficult is it to install a flip top on a PS2?

Sorry to hear. I know my Matrix Infinity modded fat PS2 w/ 120gb HDD isn't worth nearly what I'd even think about selling it for.

I'd probably consider selling my fliptop and Swap Magic if there is a reasonable offer. I haven't used it in years. I could probably fit the whole system in a flat rate box for $10 shipping.

Modchipped PS2s or install service are expensive. It's a labor intense job that must be done right. PS2 is fragile enough already, let alone worked on by someone lacking skill.

I did some research on this to play imports and came to the conclusion that buying a JP PS2 off of a forum was ultimately the cheapest and best solution. If its backups and burns you're looking for, that's a different story.
It runs safely and without trouble without a power converter, and it cost me one hundred shipped, practically new, box and all. You could probably find one for around the same price if you're willing to wait for it to list.

I suppose I didn't want to deal with the space issues that also buying a PAL PS2 would've involved.

Sure, that's a good reason to get an all-in-one unit, but if the only parameter you're really concerned about is cost, just buying an import model is the way to go.

Good question actually. After postage I'm not sure of the difference. A modded US PS2 vs both Japanese and European.

Yeah, that's the impression I'm getting after looking through a few installation guides. I don't want to waste money buying something that I don't have the skill to install.
Oh well, it's not really a high priority for me right now. I only have one JPN PS2 game anyway.

A modded PS2 is worth more than $100?

Yes, in the US.
No idea if they're cheaper from some back alley Hong Kong vendor. But who knows how reliable that would be anyway.

I didn't know that. I found a modded PS2 slim with all hookups, memory cards, multitap, and several controllers for around $25 in a thrift store. I might have had a coupon for $5 off too but I'd have to check. It came with a burned copy of a Japanese PS1 game that boots up fine, the only thing I know of that was broken was one of the controllers. I figured these were worth around $30.
I probably should have also bought the other modded slim they had months earlier but I had no way to test these out before hand so I was reluctant. It's all final sale from the Salvation Army so if systems look beat up I usually pass on them.
