This year's Spike Video Game Awards (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/vga-2012) just concluded and in between the Samuel L. Jackson skits and Black Ops 2 commercials, some awards were given to this year's standouts. The Walking Dead (http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-walking-dead) won a few, shuffling away from VGA 2012 with the Game of the Year award and Best Downloadable Game, Best Adapted Game. Telltale Games also won Studio of the Year.

Journey had the most nominations (http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/15/journey-leads-spike-vga-2012-nominations/) this year and won Best PS3 Game, Best Original Score and Best Independent Game. Best Xbox 360 Game went to Halo 4, while Best PC Game went to XCOM: Enemey Unknown. You may have missed that last one because it wasn't in the actual show.

Borderlands 2 also snagged a few: Best Shooter and Best Multiplayer Game. Dishonored ended up being awarded with Best Action Adventure Game.

For the full list of this year's winners, head past the break.Continue reading Spike VGA 2012 winners: Walking Dead takes GOTY, Journey floats away with a few awards (http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/07/spike-vga-2012-winners-walking-dead-takes-goty-journey-floats/)

The only thing notable in Spike's VGAs was the Dark Souls 2 announcement and The Last of Us trailer. Spike is irrelevant for their VGAs otherwise. Just a bunch of overrated games that don't deserve the awards they get. Walking Dead may or may not have deserved the GotY, but some of the nominees were nothing more than overhyped bullshit like the usual Video Games Awards from Spike.

The fact that the Wii and Wii U nominees were bundled together and voted for before the Wii U even came out just shows how more bullshit the VGAs are.

Well,

Say what you will about the event as a whole, but the fact that a traditional point-and-click adventure with practically ZERO action and about as much puzzle solving within the mechanics of its own genre won GOTY says something.

I'm not sure what that is, other than the fact that the game's emotional gravity/investment in the characters over the course of five episodes is the REAL fucking DEAL.

I don't expect to see a renaissance in point/click games because of this, but I do hope to see more games where there is emphasis on giving you a sense that your decisions actually matter and that you're not just racing from scripted event point A to scripted event point B.

Walking Dead is my personal game of the year, Kupo. It was a lot of folks. You should play it.
