10 Reasons Why Video Games Were Better in the '80s

Lame list, number 10 contradicts number 1.
Number 6 was one of the bad things about gaming, fighting over the tv.
Number 3 was always the case, but you just had to read the terrible dialog instead. "A WINNER IS YOU!" "I feel asleep."
Number 2 is false, and I enjoy console wars. Yes the NES had not much competition from '85-'88 due to them monopolizing the market, but that wasn't a good thing.
All in all, a terrible list.

These lists are always thrown together by some guy over the course of about one hour, if that.
Would this list even make the "Top 10 Reasons IGN Sucks" list?

The 90's was the best video game decade.
For me, the 80s was the best for video gaming, although the 90s come in a very close second.
Unfortunately, this list didn't do a good job of exemplifying it. It was just a few bullet points, with some things that were true, others that weren't and some others that maybe if the article elaborated on them, a better determination could be made.

Certain genres were better in the 80s and early 90s. Platformers dominated the console market back then and there were so many good ones in comparison to now, where now the good are few and far between. PC games were mostly RPGs and adventure games.
Late 90s to the early 2000 there weren't really any specific genres that dominated the market, although 2D platformers were fairly scarce on anything but handheld. There were a wide variety of genres available during this time frame. Early 2000s when the next consoles released to mid 2000s pretty much the same.
Platformers and RPGs are my favorite genres, so torn between the two decades. To me though, the 90s were the best. So many good RPGs were released during this time period, plus there was a lot of variety in the other genres as well. Most of the best games came out during this time period.

I don't know, the 80s was still my favorite decade. Games were simple, short, and fun. Arcade-style games simply are an anomaly anymore, and don't really play like 80s arcade games. I can't get enough of classics like Tron, Ms. Pac-Man, the original Punch-Out, Tempest, etc. And pinball too, something else that's gone to the wayside in recent years.
Plus, you can't really recreate that feeling of a dark, neon-lit, stuffy room complete a jukebox and greasy food sold nearby in your home. It's just not the same.

I don't know, the 80s was still my favorite decade. Games were simple, short, and fun.I love arcade games too, but don't forget that in the 80s we had some amazing CRPGs. We had flight sims and deep turn-based strategy games the likes of which we haven't seen since. There was a lot of depth in 80s comptuer games. We had *actually* mature titles that required serious thought, instead of what passes for "mature" today: blood and boobies.

I personally think that people have always liked the same sort of thing. It's just that they pointed to specific things in games that they liked and wanted developers to make whole games around it. It's like being given a meal, deciding that desert was the best part, and asking the chef to make nothing but desert from now on.

I agree with Baloo. The 80s arcades were the greatest. It was like every other week there was a new title to try out. In the 90's it became a flood of fighting games and it would be months before you saw anything new.
I loved playing the 8-bit computer games in the 80s. The variety of games available is pretty much un-matched, even by what is being released on PC today.
The 80's was cool, but honestly, I think maybe the late 70's is better than the 80's. Although, video gaming wasn't really going strong till the late 70's, but you did have the arrival of the Atari 2600. Air-Sea Battle anybody? Plus all the classic arcade games that were available in the late 70's.
Nothing can even come close to the 90's. Nothing ever will.

The Atari VCS really didn't take off until the 80s'. Most of the early games for the system were simple, like Hang-man and Night Driver. Space Invaders was the game that made the system a success.
