When I start collecting a year ago, I had NO IDEA what I was getting into. Last October I actually had not one single game or system. I didn't realize how fun and addictive this hobby is, and expensive.

How much did you spend? How many consoles and games did you buy?
I plan on doing some buying for PS2 after I get christmas/birthday money.
Me, I spent around $50. I bought a PS1/2 controller adapter for my computer, Xenosaga 1, Kingdom Hearts, Silent Hill 2 GH, Soul Calibur, 3 demo disks, and 3 different controllers used.
Last year I spent relatively the same amount on games and a memory card: Shadowman for ps1 (buy the N64 version with expansion pack), Doom 64, Quake 2 for PS1, Silent Hill 2 black label, Soul Reaver, Final Fantasy 8 & 9, and the ps1 emmory card, a ps2 one came with FF 8.

I started to get into emulation towards the end of 2011, so basically the only stuff I buy are controllers, adapter i mentioned, and PS2 games.
If I bought all the games Ive downloaded since then, I would have spent in the thousands.

I'm with you on this. Just in arcade sticks over $700. limited editions and one offs. I do love these.
VLX Diamond Hori, EVO Mad catz, Namco 6 button, Byrdo, other not-to-be-named crappers (just to say I have them all...freaking things are worse than Pokemon....). Oh yeah, a Hori SNES stick too... pretty cool.

I've lost track of all my purchases this year.

According to my spreadsheet, and with some guesstimation because it includes some non-game stuff, I've spent about $2600. However, I've sold approximately $5250 worth of gaming stuff. A big chunk of those sales was trading in things from my collection to Amazon when they had a couple weeks of incredibly good trade-in values (amazon credit is as good as cash for me). I don't track separately the stuff I buy to keep, though, which is probably the number that would fit best in this thread. This year it would have mostly been current generation stuff.. I bought several CEs on clearance and such, plus the Nintendo special edition stuff. The selling I do as a secondary (consequential?) hobby to my collecting.

I have been trading a lot more this year. I picked up an old Pinball (Fun Park) in trade for a gun. I have also sold some of my more valuable games on NES like Little Samson, etc.

This is probably the first year where I actually made more money selling than the total I spent. I sold about $2k worth of NES rares (strangely enough, I *also* sold my copy of Little Samson) and some other assorted rarities, and flipped a Borderlands 2 Loot Chest collector's edition for $500. :)
As for what I spent, I'd estimate it was in the neighborhood of $1500, including both older games and new ones. At least $400 of that was in the last 2 months - I've bought about 160 PS2 games since early November. I expect next year to be pretty flat - I'm planning to bulk up my PS2 collection as much as possible, but I'm hoping to offset it with sales of more of my classic stuff.

If i was to take a wild guess.. and this is a wild guess.
I would say between goodwill buys, thrift store buys, game store buys (and i've only bought 2 things from a game store this year and that was at the same time in a local mom and pops game store in salem MA), XBOX Live purchases, and Steam purchases. I would say probably some where between 300 and 400 which is alot less then last year. Last year I spent probably around 800 bucks between lots and all that

What did you buy?
Not any really large items, but I started gollecting Genesis games again and I'm up to 50+ titles now, 8 gameboy micros (going for a complete collection), a dozen or so GBA games, about 40 or so SNES games, 30+ N64 games, random portables and a TON of game-related things such as Universal Game Cases, parts for modding consoles, shelving materials, etc.
Plus quite a few modern games and some other stuff that I know I'm forgetting.

Hahaha... I hadn't even thought about the total I spent. I always spend a lot each year, but this year was something special. I had one massive purchase, but didn't even realize how much I spent prior to it until I looked at the totals on my spreadsheet for the year.
So, in the end, I dropped $30,100 on video games this year (about 50% more than the past few years)... and about another $6,000 on board games (I went kickstarter crazy)... HAHAHAHA!!!
I can't wait to dump everything and find a new hobby in few years. I won't even know where to begin... :P

Same here. Between thrifts, pawn shops, yard sales, and ebay, lots of games and controllers have come into my collection.

I haven't bought a whole lot this year. Mainly because I mostly buy for my collection from thrift stores and flea markets, and eBay resellers have made sure there's nothing worth buying in the wild. I said that I buy mainly at fleas and thrifts, but I've also bought stuff at the Oklahoma Video Game Expo, which might be one of the heavier spending sprees I went on this year. But I bought less than I wanted to, since the guy selling PC Engine imports wasn't there this year. I'd have blown a lot more cash if that were the case.

Probably around $100 or so. Been spending more time at the swapmeet, so my gaming dollar stretches a lot further than it did when I was buying new games from retail.

No Lynx, but I did buy clear yellow and clear green JP NGPC units. Also bought a few old Gameboys, 2 GBP, 3 GBC, a Nomad, Retrogen (portable Genesis), WonderSwan Crystal, 2 WonderSwan B&W, and more than a dozen SPs and normal GBAs (for modding).

But seriously, not really that much. Especially since I've had to put my collection on the shelf(literally it's already there, though) for the last half year or so. But now I've got some nice stuff incoming! :D

Not that much. I did buy Tempest for the 5200 when it came out, and I picked up some NES and SMS games at Flea World, and I picked up a box of Colecovision games and controllers at a yard sale for $10. Probably less than $100 all together. Didn't buy a single "modern" game.

Bit more than I normally do. Normally I'm within the $100 range, this year was nearly $200, what with the new WoW expansion and having to add subscription time. And the years not out yet, I still need to renew my PSN+ in a few weeks.

Honestly I couldn't begin to guess.
I mean I bought a WiiU Deluxe Set, Mario and ME3 around probably $450 taxed/shipped in the end, another $25 shipped on ZombiU.
Got a used PS3 $15 FF13-2 game months ago but still no time to use it because of where the PS3 is and also the original COD Black Ops but that's it there.
I did get a used Vita with some games, but since Sony is dumb and thinks a system doesn't need more releases I sold what I had and broke even so that I won't add in.
3DS came out in March, I have 11 games for it, did have 3 others but sold them, and paid full price on most of what I do have though I got Cave Story and Mario Kart 7 for half off and just got a $10 circle pad pro in the mail yesterday. I did get like 5 GB games on that thing which is like maybe $20 and another $20~ on some 3D Classics, and another $10-15 on a few eShop items.
That's it as far as current hardware goes.
A lot of my spending and wheeling and dealing is with OLD stuff. I coudn't even being to guess, but I do know that between what I do buy and what I as flipping I didn't bury myself in expenses, if anything I probably broke even or came out a few dollars ahead so I really can't say what I spent.
I know for some systems I've snapped up and kept items like on N64 like 12-14 games. Wii I did get Metal Slug, Endless Ocean 2 and Muramasa for under $50 for all of them. The problem is the SNES and NES as I put a lot into those and I really couldn't guess the price anymore without going through NintendoAge and eBay transaction histories and yet a good bit was flea market non-receipt stuff. I will say though I have a rule with games never to pay over original retail(shipping aside) and kept to that. I did splurge and get a StarFox2 repro for $70 3 months ago, and yesterday downright abnormal for me I pissed $175 on 8 boxed up NES titles (80 shipped), a CIB Arkanoid w/vaus (65 shipped), and did a trade/cash mix of $30+6SMS PAL games+Climber Game&Watch for Bubble Bobble 2+Bomberman 2 NES.

I also keep track of all of my purchases on a spreadsheet so I could look back on all the bad decisions I've made. So far this year I'm just under $1000. This is only my second year of collecting so I got a lot of the basic stuff, 2 boxed Sega Gen, boxed nes 101, Sega CD/32x. Inttelevision, odyssey 2, Atari 800xl. Sms
All of that stuff I got for pretty cheap, What really set me back is the Games. $10 or $20 every other week and it starts to add up. Something like 150-200 games, but nothing too rare.

I pretty much bought the most things that I can for my collection: like a Model 1 Sega Saturn, Bubsy 3D for the PlayStation 1 (yes, I wasted my money on this game just so I can have it for my collection), Missile Command for the Atari 2600, Shenmue and Sonic Adventure 2 for the Dreamcast, the Power Glove... I could just go on and on on what games and consoles I bought.

Probably a few thousand, but at least half of that money has been profit from reselling either finds, or stuff I decided not to collect anymore.

Under $300 would be my guess, I'm almost certain of it. Just been picking up odds and ends, mostly online.
Actually it would be more than that, we bought an original Wii in the beginning of January but as far as stuff for my collection its $300 or less.

Since the topic was revived... My husband and I have spent probably near $3000. But we justify it because we're buying for a family. So included in that is the Wii U for the family and 3DSs for both the boys. When you think per-person, the total is way less ;)

I've spent less than a hundred bucks, I think.
I have so much stuff now that I haven't played, that I can't justify buying more.
This year the only thing on my shopping list will be new arcade stick and the occasional Steam download.

Last year I spent about one billion dollars on games. Well, one billion Nigerian so thats roughly $100 US give or take. Actually I probably spent around $500 or so but alot of that was from yard sales, flea markets and Goodwills to resell.
