Hey all, I'm new here, so sorry if I make a mistake in the post. However I hope I am following all the rules and what a great forum! Anyhow, I am trying to sort out a couple of things and was hoping for some assistance. I recently took an interest to finding out all I could about the Sega Genesis U.S. launch in 1989. I would like to know a couple of things:

In the original Sega Genesis Console, packed with Altered Beast, did it come with a RF modulator or were A/V cables included? (DIN to Composite I believe) I am thinking RF, but wanted to know for sure.

Building on that, if RF was included, was a A/V cable available for order/purchase at stores?

I would also like to know when/if an additional controller was available for purchase at launch or in 89'. Additionally, was the arcade stick available by the end of December of 1989?

Thanks to anyone who can answer any or all of these questions!

One final note, I found this neat post on an old Usenet forum...seems to indicate that a Control Pad and a A/V cable were available in Dec of 1989, any thoughts? What are these other items that it references?

Also, am I correct to assume that the Arcade Power Stick did not release until Early 1990?

3015 Video Cable $10.00 ________ __________ <-- Is this a Composite Video Cable? Yes
3045 F-Type Converter (300/75 ohm) 3.00 ________ __________ <-- What is this? This is one of those Coax to screw type connectors.
3055 Matching Transformer (75/300 ohm) 3.00 ________ __________ <-- What is this? This is one of those Coax to screw type connectors.

I was there for the launch and I don't remember if the joystick was available at launch. I remember getting my Sega Genesis with Altered Beast. I purchased Tommy Lasorda Baseball and a composite cable. I was in the Air Force at the time and had a group of friends over to play Altered Beast and Baseball. I remember Ghouls and Ghosts coming out a month later and driving all over the Island of Hawaii to find a copy. Kay B Toys had the only copy left and it cost me $79.99. I loved the game and it was the first time that I felt I was playing arcade quality games at home. I still have my Sega Genesis.

It came with RF only.

You could buy a composite cable separately at stores.

I would also like to know when/if an additional controller was available for purchase at launch or in 89'. Additionally, was the arcade stick available by the end of December of 1989?

I believe separate controllers were available right at launch. I think the three-button stick came out a bit later.

Great, thanks for the replies! Yeah it seems that the Arcade Power Stick came out in 90', around May or June. Does that sound correct to everyone? If someone could find a release date for that, it would be very much appreciated!

Yes, the Arcade Power Stick was definitely sometime after launch; your timeframe of May-June 1990 sounds correct. Everything I've read indicates that extra control pads were available in some areas at launch, but not when I purchased my system here (Cbus, OH) in late August, 1989; we spent several weeks suffering through Altered Beast 2-player using a C64 stick for Player 2 until TRU finally got spare pads in stock in September/October.

Anyone happen to recall how soon the Power Base Converter was available? I'm thinking it launched with the system, but I could be mis-remembering.

From what I understand I think the PBC dropped sometime in November of 89'. If anyone with first hand knowledge could comment that would be great though!
