ok so I know I posted in the past about a show I was trying to do and it did not turn out well. I think Ive come up with a topic I would really like to discuss and hopefully you guys might enjoy. If this breaks any rules by posting a new thread I'm sorry I just figured since it's a new show it should be a new thread.

anyway, the show will be covering hidden gems in past generations of gaming. games that me or most people I know havent heard of but I certainly enjoyed. I got the idea after buying Genesis games I've never heard of by a publisher by the name of Renovation. Never heard of them or the games theyve published but I quite enjoyed the boxart, music and gameplay, especially Valis III.

Would you guys be interested in such a show? and do you have any recommendations on any games you considered hidden gems?

If there weren't another dozen+ people that have done this already, then yes, I'd be interested. I also wouldn't consider Valis 3 a hidden gem, especially not in 2012. For something to remain a hidden gem at this point, it must have been released in quantities of less than 500 and only on a small island off Australia's sothern coast. The Internet has been around long enough that pretty much every hidden gem that may have been missed by the masses has been posted about, blogged about, reviewed, etc.

All that said, if you want to do it, then DO IT. I can't speak for everyone, but I really don't care what someone is thinking about doing. I don't know why you need to be seek approval for these various video projects that you have planned, but I'd get used to NOT getting support when you're so clearly just fishing for it. You're essentially asking for praise when you haven't done anything yet.

Make it, and if its good, then the support will come.

I dont blame you for posting this asking people what they thought. Honestly its not worth putting hours of hard work into a show no one watches, so it makes sense to ask people if theyd be interested in it, and to tell people this type of show will come out.

I think you have a good idea, hidden gems are great to discover. A lot of people on message boards liek this one though, they know a TON of games that casual gamers who are looking for old classics and weird little treasures dont. Id say make a show that will focus on a game that doesnt have a lot of reviews on youtube. I found The RPG Fanatic by looking for information on Azure Dreams.

I was going to make a show, and I posted a similar thread about this. So I encourage you to do your show, and have a lot of interesting games you know a lot about so its informative and well put together. Also, it helps to look aroud nat other similar shows that are already out there. I discovered The Game Overthinker put well made videos together that would touch upon all the possible subjects I would have done in my own videos. If I do make the show, which was to be more reviewing not editorial, then Ill make sure I know ho wot say things my own way while avoiding coming off as a copy cat or rip off. You can certainly say the same things other people say, just like in any other medium/genre. There are so many 2D side scrollers, try to be more Super Marios 3 of your own thing, and not McKids.

I really think most people here speak from years of experience and you guys basically know everything. I think the show sounds good and I would really be on board with this idea.

thanks for the ideas guys, i might still start off with valis 3 only because im already editing it and finalizing.
im a huge gamer (especially retro) and an aspiring film maker. so this would be a fun project. I know theres thousands of game shows out there already, but this is something I would like to try. I'm putting this together with a friend of mine whos reviewing free to play games and flash games worth noting.

@wiggy. not necessairly fishing, but testing waters, didnt want to put the thread up with the video first and risk it looking like spam or that twenty unreleased consoles thread a little bit back. p.s. love your mod work and was wondering if theres a way to replicate the battery door of a NGPC as mine came without one.

I didn't really get the impression that he was fishing for compliments or praise for something he hasn't done yet, wiggyx. I think that a lot of us are a little jaded, and have a hard time giving people the benefit of the doubt sometimes (and I'm probably no exception to this). In any event, it just seemed like he was testing the waters and getting a feel for how well received his project would be from a cross section of his audience.

If everyone was like, "that's really a terrible idea", or "dude, that's been done to death", or "that sounds really boring, man", than he might reconsider and go a different route. And there's nothing wrong with that. I think it's awesome that it's relatively simple today for anyone to produce a web show that caters to their interests, and I don't think anything is wrong with soliciting a little feedback to gauge how such a show would be received. No one really wants to sink a lot of time and effort into a project that no one is going to want to watch after all.

With that said, Jack7, I believe Renovation was a popular publisher back in the day. I'm probably biased though, since they were one of my favorite publishers of the 16-bit generation (my handle and avatar are from Valis II).

Elemental Master, El Viento, Final Zone I, II, Gaiares, Last Alert, Time Gal, the Valis series, I love those games. Hell, if I did a web show I would probably to a review show focusing on certain publishers and developers, and do episodes (or a series of episodes) focusing on a particular one each time, covering my favorite games of theirs per platform and/or generation.

BTW, I'm not suggesting you do that or anything, I'm just making conversation.

I think your idea is fine. Apparently there are a lot of people who cover that sort of thing already, but there's nothing wrong with that, IMO. So long as your show has something that's different, or is simply good enough to subscribe to, I don't think it matters if the format has been used, or is common.

FWIW, some of the favorite shows are review show where there's not really any gimmick or schtick, just well produced reviews where the reviewer's personality 'sells' the show. spida1a's youtube show, 'Turbo Views' is a perfect example. He reviews Turbo Grafx games, and only Turbo Grafx games (well, he does some videos on his pinball games as well), and he has a really genuine, likable personality, and a great broadcasting voice. He casually integrates little stories about when he was younger if it's a game that he got back in the day, or just a game he wanted, or saw something about back when the console was new. He makes a few silly jokes every now and again, but it's never anything forced, or contrived. He shows a ton of footage from the games, too. In fact, the only time you ever see him is if he's doing a video that's not a game review, like videos where he talks about his collection or interests, and he doesn't do many of those.

Anyway, everyone likes different things, and I encourage you to be true to your passion and vision. Good luck with your project, whatever it ends up being.

+100. Just do what your gaming heart says to do, and if it's any good, it'll find its own audience.
Remember the most important thing is to have fun.

example: on my website I recently reviewed Super Mario World this past May. It's the world's 52,789th review on SMW. Does the world need another SMW review? Probably not, but it's the first SMW review produced and written by... me. And as much as anyone might love your material, the person who reads it the most in the end will probably be its own author. As long as you feel you can bring your own style to the table, then who cares about what others may think? At least, that's always been how I've approached things. Heck, I'm about to review another classic game that the world doesn't need another review for, but as far as I figure, it's a review RVGFANATIC needs ;)

What I want is a show about hidden Famicom and Super Fam gems. I know Steven(i think) turned me onto BS Golf and I LOVE IT! I even paid $10 for a stranger to convert it for play on the powerpak. Finding more GEMS like that is what I want to see!!! Import games that can be easily played without any translation.

You talkin' 'bout me? :P

I was thinking of doing actual Satellaview game reviews on my Youtube profile, (http://www.youtube.com/KiddoCabbusses) but I tend to be occupied with actually finding new Satellaview games first and foremost (http://superfamicom.org/blog/). I also am not too encouraged with my own video editing and scripting skills yet.

Satellaview games would certainly be going into "Hidden Gems" territory, and hidden gems that are still being hidden, at that! I could possibly go on for quite a while mentioning various tidbits that hardly anyone in the English-speaking world knows.

Sega Pico would be a... interesting novelty to explore, too, from what I've played of recent ROM dumps.

Glad to help! I've loved "BS Out of Bounds Golf" or "OB Club" (whatever one wishes to call it) for many years now, and was more than happy to spread the word on it. Kiddo is the one we both paid $10 to to convert it onto the PowerPak. Good times.

Good video! I'll be checking out upcoming episodes from you. :)

You could do with some minor polishing on things like your voice recording, and perhaps the intro is a bit too long and the rest of the video slightly too short. But other than that, I have nothing to add. I found it genuinely interesting and funny. ^^

I think you're off to a fine start. It's going to take a number of episodes for you to find your groove, just stick with it.

I know exactly how you feel, because I started my own retro game podcast back in September, and it's been challenging. The first episode was a little rough, but I feel like we're starting to get our own identity now. Sure there are tons of other retro game podcasts out there, but I think our genuine love and enthusiasm for games along with our banter will help us establish a following in the future.

Don't get too worried about subscribers and such right now, just focus on the show and how to make it better, the viewers will then come to you. It helps to watch other shows like yours. Not necessarily to plagiarize or poach, but too look at different techniques, be it editing, monologues, visual effects, etc. and see which ones you do and don't like, and what may work for you. I often listen to other amateur podcasts so I have a gauge of how I'm doing and to avoid doing things I dislike hearing in other folks' shows.

Just my 2.

Keep it up.

thanks for the input guys, yeah im hoping i'll hit a groove with the show, my buddy plans on doing in depth hardware reviews on the channel, first one he's doing is a breakdown of our playchoice 10 machine. were also planning on doing a speedrun racing series.

but yeah I watch alot if reviewers i just want to steer clear of watching ones that i review so i dont subconsciously use someone elses point and I can honestly say we just had the same thought process

Haha it's another "if you build it... they will come" scenario.

I just downloaded Sony Vegas Pro so I can edit my videos better instead of just using a crappy camera like I used to. Now I just have to come up with my creative aspect that will make things slightly different than the average. There are so many different angles this can and already has been approached. To be honest I don't watch Angry Video Game Nerd to learn about games - I can do that myself. I watch it for the comedy. The things they say are hilarious.

I agree i love the nerd but it's more of a sketch comedy but with video games as the base. same with jontron. my goal is to bring those kinda just getting into collecting or venturing backwards a look at something they may have missed that I find worth checking out. Like valis, never heard of it before, checked it out thought it was worth bringing up.
Ive been using vegas for a couple years now, thats what they had at the college I went to. so i learned that. I'm partial to it but generally because I'm a lil lazy sometimes and dont want to learn how to use another editor

I am always on the lookout for great hidden gems, or generally obscure games that nobody talks about on a large scale. Your first video was great, well edited too. Looking forward to more!

I'm about to start doing my own videos shortly and imo it's all about the editing and production value. The content is important but it's not something that is going to differentiate you from others. Hidden gems isn't anything new and you won't be talking about any game that hasn't already been talked about.

I always make it my goal to focus on editing skills and production value.

Imo the best videos to watch for some observance besides AVGN would be captain8bit.

I'm starting to realize this which is why instead of going the hidden gem route just going obscure. Or really anything that catches my attention. what editing program do you plan on using?

Demonstrably untrue - we still find out new things about "simple" arcade shooters over at Shmups Forums, and there are plenty of games people don't know about (http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=42409). Or for PlayStation, Jonathan Ingram's posts here (http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=43761&start=150). Most of these are games I've never heard of let alone seen.

I don't think you have to have a really authoritative knowledge of anything to do a "hidden gems" showcase but it would help to have some idea of what's known. Renovation / Wolfteam games aren't really unknown.
Truth be told, the only reason I watch gameplay footage is to have a fun time - something Retsupurae does pretty well - or to learn something, in which case I do turn to the experts (i.e. finding a scoring strategy for a game).

I really think most people here speak from years of experience and you guys basically know everything.
Agreed, there's a natural bias towards "ehh this is last decade's news" but there are people coming and going from the scene all the time :)

My personal thoughts: Do be a good host if you have to speak. Some of it is unfortunately more or less out of your control but you can keep on trying to get better.
