View Full Version : Oh god I can't believe it took me this long to find the show Gamecenter CX

Now I'm always gonna call the disappearing blocks in Mega Man, "Bwuus" it's a very fitting name. I don't see any other Gamecenter CX threads here. Though I know some of you know what it is. It's tv show in Japan where a guy plays through a classic game in each episode and he's not the best player in the world so it's entertaining. Though I also heard it was staged but still it's entertaining and I think western tv should have a show like it.

I like how they constantly find Metal Slug cabinets in the strangest places.

What's up with the bandage on his forehead? Do I need to watch an entire episode to understand that, or is there some back story I'm missing?

I wish they would have released the second DS game in the states. :(

The “bandage on his forehead” is a cooling strip.

(Oh god I can't believe it...)'s not dur butter! This is what I was hoping for. LOL

It's a fun show but too focused on Famicom.

As understatement said, they're cooling sheets. Essentially it's sticky menthol on a thin, soft pad that adheres to the skin. I'll admit I do use them every now and then. They give you a little surge of "WAKE THE HELL UP!"

Interestly it was recommended on my youtube feed. Downloading some of the first episodes, cant wait to see him do Ghosts N Goblins.

Im really enjoying them playing The Atlantis Mystery game. And the commercials for old Famicom versions of games is cool. :)

GameCenter CX is just about the best thing on television, the best japanese show I've ever seen, and the international community around it is also fantastic.

GameCenter CX's host is a gamer, but he's also an every man and his comments are always very funny.

To watch him fail and then triumph later is immensely more entertaining that watching a skilled gamer play, or watching a goddamn tool-assisted speed run.

It's also important to note that Arino never becomes overly upset. Win or lose, games are about fun for him, the way it should be.

The show's focus on the Famicom is another huge draw for me. As anyone who has read my top 100 NES/Famicom game list, the Famicom is my favorite system of all time, so seeing him play through many of the Famicom games I own is pure bliss.

Not to mention the trips to Japanese arcades, and his heartwarming play of Metal Slug 1 with a old woman early in the show's run. Who else but Arino could convince an elderly lady to play a co-op NeoGeo shoot up up?

GameCenter CX is pure gold, as are both DS games, especially the Japan-only sequel.

if you really like the show, there is a North American official dvd box set

http://www.rightstuf.com/1-800-338-6827/catalogmgr/qYak4gpAnN0=BeLDgP/browse/item/95528/4/0/0

A little pricey, but official releases should always be mentioned whenever possible.

But does it have the awful Kotaku voice over?

I'd rather buy it directly from Discotek Media than Rightstuf as Discotek made the DVD set, it's $5 more but shipping is free with Discotek Media. Plus it's easier to order from them if you're outside the US, unlike Rightstuf which almost requires a prostate exam.

Yes, but only as an optional track. The original Japanese is there as well with a fresh translation from Something Awful GCCX Team's Zari-Gani. More or less it's an official release of a fansubbing project and the best way to show that: yes there is a market for GCCX in the USA in its original form and yes people will support the show with their money.

Don't worry, you won't have to put up with the "KAA-CHO" and "Ah-Rino."

Exceptt hat the English DVD takes RANDOM episodes and throws them on the disc. The show doesn't deserve that. There should be proper dvds like one per season.

It's not really random. They had to begin with the episodes previously licensed by Gawker media. Discotek Media then secured additional episodes to be included (Ninja Gaiden II, etc.) that were not part of the original Kotaku licensed set.

Even the Japanese DVD releases aren't split into specific seasons, they're fan requested and staff chosen episodes from around the time of release and special extra features / challenges.

So the guy with the cooling pad is the character in Retro Game Challenge? That was possibly my favorite DS game.

Interesting, I always wondered about that.

I've seen clips of this show here and there, guess it's about time I officially sit down and watch a few full episodes.

Im in love with this show now, thank you so much for making this thread.

In Ghost N Goblins I didnt have a hard time with Red Arimer, but the wavy ghosts and armor was a real pain. Im gonna try at it again, my gaming muscles need a real flex anyway. Id love to play the Ninja Gaiden games too, god help me.

Spike TV bought the rights and will be "adapting" a US version. Will most likely suck.

I am so happy to see that someone made a GCCX thread. I fell in love with this show at some point last year or so, and I've been loving it ever since. Quest for Ki is probably my favorite episode. There's something incredibly entertaining about watching a middle aged Japanese man play games, and I haven't quite figured out why.

This show deserves more LUV. :D gonna post about it on other forums. SO glad its still going. If a Spike one is made I hope they also show these episodes like they did with Takeshis Castle.
