Why are these still manufactured and readily available? Do they have any use outside of an NES, I'm guessing that they do.

Actually, I don't think they do. I think they're made in a sweatshop factory somewhere and just mass distributed strictly for NES.
I don't know if they're all made equal however.

The small issue is they're mostly made for front loaders. Good luck if for some reason your vertical system's connector needs repair!
Difficult to buy standalone connectors with exact specs for NES2 or other such versions. Their pin spacing is usually 2.54mm, instead of 2.55mm.

They're made in mass from multiple sources just for the classic NES system alone. The annoying problem is almost all of them suck compared to the original. Some are too tight and can be bad enough to pull their own pins out of it or scrape the surface off your carts pins. A lot of them are also made super cheaply of crap quality metals that can either get brittle and fall apart or they go from death grip to annoyingly loose in a pretty quick amount of time depending on your personal usage.

I wish I could be of more help but I forgot the name but there was just one seller of them on ebay that had a quality reproduction of the original that lasted long and didn't have the death grip either.

Personally I use only original parts. I've found it's easier to just repair an old one than bother. Bending the pins back towards center isn't hard, and if your metal is weak boiling it for a few minutes and letting it dry works too (there's a forum post on NA how to do it.)

Whenever I see a system advertised with a new connector I avoid buying it, the new connectors are junk.
